      Failed WILD?

This morning, I woke up at 5:30, since I usually get up at 6:30 for school. Anyway, I recalled two dreams and then used IAmCoder's WILD inducer for the first time. For those of you who don't know what that is, it flashes black and white and is supposed to reset your pineal gland to put you on the edge of awareness between wake and sleep.*

So I did that for thirty or so seconds(with my eyes closed) and climbed into bed. I had no success laying on my back, so I slept in my normal position and attempted to stay awake. I had no hallucinations; just lots of thoughts. I laythere for what seemed like 15 minutes, and my alarm then went off. That 15 minutes of random thinking actually was an hour long. I didn't feel like I was sleeping.

My theory is that the flashing lights stopped my current REM period, but if another cycle came along I might have been successful.*

      What do you guys think?

I think give that Inducer a second chance. Do the same thing again tonight if you can. It might have been a one off fluke that your weren't in the right frame of mind. Then if it doesn't work again, leave it, it obviously does something negative for you, so you should stick with regular WBTB and WILD.
I started that 2 days ago, both nights yielded something, so I am delighted with that.

As for it messing up your REM cycle... I doubt some flashing lights can reset your pineal gland to make you more aware (or less, I don't know what was said to you), I think just doing things and basically making your brain know you are awake and active is the best way to become aware. Do that, and then try a WILD in your most comfortable position, or if you can manage it, it is supposed to be easier on your back.

How many hours sleep had you had before WBTB, the best times (usually) is 4.5 or 6 hours after sleep.
I haven't tried this technique, but I'd rather try WILDs naturally than try to induce them with flashing lights.
Give it another go, or more if you feel like your unlucky, WILDs are very difficult, try a different technique if you lose hope.
      Keep it up

We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Well firstly I think you're concentrating on the wrong things. The fundamental element of a successful WILD is not thinking about anything related to it at all - not even staying awake. The object of it all is to go to sleep but remain aware, not awake. If you try to stay awake, you will just stay awake, and you won't have a WILD.

That sounds like alpha wave sleep, to me. Your timing was off. If you just woke from a dream, you know what time to be shooting for. Wake about 30-45 minutes earlier next time, and you should nail it.
