given that you can control things in dreams and conjure people/objects, i've started doing stuff like the following. if i'm about to turn around to go somewhere, i'll go, eg, "there's a G-36 leaning up against the wall by the door" (i like guns, heh). i'll picture that and turn. i'm hoping one day there WILL be, and i'll lucid. you can do all sorts, like going down stairs, think "i'll hop off the bottom step and fly instead of landing".
seem reasonable? i thought the idea of looking around and trying to spot discrepancies was too involved : why not simplify the check by doing something that would prove a dream straight away?
I do this with text reality checks. Text naturally changes in a dream, but I "expect" it to change in a certain way, so it would be easier to identify the change. For example if I read the word "shop", I will look back and expect it to "store" or "supermarket".
In terms of visualizing changes like you do with G36, you are just gimping your real dream control abilities, because you will repeatedly fail to "conjure" the expected result in reality, causing you to expect failure in a dream. I'd say stick to traditional reality checks.
But then again, I do have a G36 replica, so I may not want it as badly as you do
