Like others have stated, all the concepts you learned, you'll eventually find yourself making those neurological connections without you even knowing it, and something that I may add that I'm starting to notice that improves my recall (or just anything in general)is:
During hypnosis sessions (even when I'm not even aiming for dream recall), I found that the tonality of how I say a particular script I make contributes to me being more focused, an inward focus/concentration. Just like when you tell a story to someone, they detect how you feel happy or depressed in moments, and you can find yourself literally imagining what they're doing. Because when you're listening to the story, your unconscious is digging whatever it is in the confines of your mind to relate to the situation (i.e. When people ask, "You know when so and so does this, and they do this?"). It's what we naturally do when we want to get in synch with what a person is saying, because stories themselves actually bypass our critical factor, because it'll be thinking, "Oh! It's just a story!"
Now, you apply this same principle that hypnosis can provide (bypassing that critical factor), when you learn to develop your own tonality, or "hypnotist" voice or "trance voice" even, you see the imagery coming by naturally, and you don't really question it, because you already know what's going to happen. You create this sense of confidence where you acknowledge that your unconscious will connect the dots together to make something happen, and when we find ourselves having better recall or just remembering a lucid dream, we wonder where it came from, when it was simply the workings of the unconscious mind and its implicit knowledge, or just the ability to see the patterns connect together and run smoothly.
So yes, thinking about lucidity during the day and all those other aspects will contribute with being lucid at night, but you can take it even further by learning hypnosis. It's just one route, or one process to get to the trance state (where we can become in a more suggestive state). We go through trance states naturally without even knowing it, and people also use mantras as a conduit in getting into a trance state, so with practice, it can help. However, usually because of our critical factors, it varies on how those suggestions leak into our minds and expands with mantras, some people just have better grasp on conceptualizing what they want to do in the end, but sometimes the mild hypnotic process we go through with mantras isn't enough, so extending it a bit (like a story), helps a lot, because it seeps into the mind easier. Instead of giving the critical factor time to analyze things, you're already distracting it and getting the suggestions in. And the more you do it, the easier it gets.
I hopefully will make a thread with hypnosis scripts and learning how to develop your own hypnotist voice and all that fun stuff. Anyway, good luck.
