It's not a bad practice, you can work it into a Sageous (tm) RRC which among other things includes that memory exercise (roughly equivalent).

With your experience though I'd go for the gusto: cultivate continual awareness: mindfulness/vigilance. Know that at *any* conscious moment, you could actually be dreaming! I had a DILD last month I think where I did just this: I had a situation where I wished I was dreaming. I stopped dead in my tracks and asked myself, "Why do I think I'm awake!? ... (nose pinch), Yahoo!"

Notice things...including your own mind and thoughts, notice when you stop noticing things.

Stay tuned in. When you find you've zoned out, quietly tune back in and try to stay there.

Gets easier and more natural after a while. Now I just don't *feel right* if I'm zoned out, I'll catch it pretty soon.

Summary: cultivate mindfulness, and keep the "RC"s short and sweet, like nose pinch. When you're in a dream and you want to know if you're dreaming, you want something fast and clear, not a bunch of questions where you could get swept up off into the dream plot again or lost in the fog of your dream-y memory, etc.
