My explanation is a bit more mundane and reflects my bias in "western medicine." What you describe is the classic beginnings of a Stage I pressure ulcer. It is caused by a relative lack of blood to the tissue over the sacrum from the weight of the body. Deprivation of blood to the skin and subcutaneous tissue causes both the redness and the pain. Re-positioning off the pressure point is the simple cure. Sometimes, better padding (like a gel pad or lambs wool) in an otherwise healthy person (no diabetes or cardiovascular disease) is all that is needed to resolve the issue you describe. |
