I am working with a friend of mine to provide the music and sound system for a school dance. I brought a sound system in and he brought the music and DJ equipment. The room was a large open space with a mezzanine toward the rear of the room. I set up my sound system and wire up my mixer into a sound booth in the middle of the room, then I pull some cables to the front of the room and connect to his DJ board. We do a quick sound check, then he drops the first track.

The first track sounds good and people are dancing. The speakers sound great and the subwoofers are putting out some good bass. When he puts on the second track, he turns the volume way down and it can barely be heard. I walk up to the DJ board and he's complaining that it's too loud. The sound is barely coming out of the speakers. I get him to turn up the board and tell him to keep the main levels peaked at the first yellow light. Explaining that he needs to adjust the booth monitors if it sounds too loud to him, he tweaks the booth knob a bit and gives me a thumbs-up.

The next couple of tracks sound good. The bass is sounding good and several people are dancing. Then, again, he turns the main way down so nobody can hear it. When I walk over, he is complaining again that it is too loud. When he turns it back up, The sound can barely be heard at the DJ booth. Becoming a bit agitated, I turn the monitors down a bit, then turn the mains back up again.

He plays a couple more tracks, then turns it down again. I walk to the DJ booth again and let him know that I am not happy. I turn up the mains and tape them with some duct tape to keep him from turning them down again. I go back to my sound booth and crank up the volume. He plays a couple more tracks, then turns it down somehow.
