    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #215: Hubris

I’m in the office with my friend Z, talking to him about lucid dreaming. I’m in my rolling chair pulled up next to his desk, my foot rudely up on the wall like I was raised in a barn.

I’m telling a story about a guy who was trying to do shared dreaming. I tell Z, “And what he didn’t even realize is that she was in a completely different time zone!” I say this like it’s some kind of punchline and wait for him to laugh. He doesn’t react and I think, Wait, that’s not funny. Not even a little bit. I check my state and
    realize that I’m dreaming.

Z has vanished, so I get up out of the chair, thinking over my goals. Okay, take things slow at the beginning, then summon Dreamer. I hit the nose pinch reality check and breathe right through. I keep the nose pinch clamped on and enjoy the feeling of breathing in and out through pinched fingers.

I wander slowly around the office, which has grown to about three times its normal size. There are cardboard boxes of paper scattered here and there, something I’ve never seen in the actual office. I walk over to the kitchen, look out at the fridge and spot an extra water cooler that wasn’t there before.

When I return to the office there are more and more boxes of paper. When I notice this, they seem to multiply every direction that I look. An older guy, a well-dressed, gray-haired man in his early 50s, walks through the door and nods a greeting at me before wandering off.

Suddenly I become obsessed with keeping the dream stable and start congratulating myself on what a bang-up job I’m doing of keeping all of this held together. I start thinking of my sleeping body back in bed and wonder what position I’m sleeping in. How cool it is that I’m here and “it’s” over there! I wonder if I’m sleeping on my side right now. Am I breathing in and out at the same rate as I am in the dream?

This stream of boastful thoughts continues for a while until my self-congratulation peters out into...
    an awakening in my bed.

You are hilarious! I can't decide who's my favourite: Cocky Lucidus or Canis NoPantsidus? :canislucidus:

Good job remembering to ground yourself though, that's the first step!

Ha, thanks! I will answer to both names. Now if I can just keep my foolish pride in check and keep the dream from de-pantsing me, I'll have this "Dream Control" thing figured out once and for all!

Dream humor as an RC, now that's something new! Congrats on getting it right, I totally would have failed because I think it is funny.

The last part of the dream was very cool. I love those moments where you can stop and wonder about it all.

Ha ha, that's true, I've not often used my faulty dream sense of humor as an RC. It's weird, though, because I have this vague sense that it has happened to me before, like I said something else not-funny in a dream long ago and got lucid off of it... ? Drawing a blank, though, may be misremembering.

Thanks, that's a good point! That makes me feel a little better. Makes me seem more like an introspective soul than a goofy showoff who blows up his own dream by patting himself on the back about how "skilled" he is!

I'm often impressed how well you remember lots of your past lds and are able to find them and refer us to them. Do you go back to past entries to read them or is this a result of good journalling organization? I'm afraid the quantity of my note taking surpasses my ability to properly organize them and I haven't read past entries in quite a while. Something that I think is a must in order to reaffirm skills and build up more confidence.

Oh, thanks! Sometimes I'm lucky enough to remember and other times I use "Search by Tag" and hope for the best. Reviewing past entries is a great idea, I think, especially the lucids! On t he occasions when I've found time to do it, I inevitably get all excited about lucid dreaming and feel confident reviewing some of the stuff I pulled off in my very best efforts. (I try to gloss over the dream control glitches, ha ha...)

I'm sorry man, I was just picturing this with boxes of papers appearing, gradually looking more and more frazzled.... (Oh it's artemis btw. I got bored with my old user and didn't know what to change it to.)

Ha ha, yes those boxes of paper were starting to become quite the problem. My issue is that I tend to react much like the picture up there ^^^ and the problem multiplies and multiplies!

I know, I couldn't believe my activity feed when the familiar "graceful she-wolf" avatar rolled by sporting a completely new name!

While you were observing the boxes you seemed cool as a cucumber though, so that's good If I was in your dream I think I'd act that way too. Especially if the boxes were filled with work.

      Believe it!
