Lucid #264: The Lone and Level Sands

I’m walking near the corner of our house with my 5-year-old son E, inspecting some kind of odd, muddy buildup that’s caked all along the side of the house. It looks like it was sprayed there. For some reason I think that my next door neighbor sprayed this mud from his yard onto the side of my house. I become fretful that our relationship has soured somehow and wonder whether there was some conflict that I’ve forgotten about. As I think more about all of this, I realized that I have to be dreaming.

I turn to the east, looking toward my neighbor’s house. But everything to the east is a vast, quiet desert. Where my neighbor’s house would be is just the skeletal frame of a house, long abandoned. And now when I turn back to where my house was moments ago, there’s nothing but a ruined frame.

E is still beside me. The desert sun is bearing down on us now. I feel like we’ve just witnessed the passing of centuries, and that everything we know is long gone. I want to be someplace else, so I take a step forward and suddenly we’re in a stone chamber looking out through a long, horizontal window at the desert scene.

“Daddy, what happened to the house?” asks E. I don’t answer, but just tell him (and myself) that this is a dream.

The view through the window grows brighter and brighter, and I’m drawn into and through it, back outside, but this time into a quiet, unspoiled grassland. I sense that this is my neighborhood again, but now centuries before humans arrived in North America. I expect to see bison, and of course I see a lone bison off in the distance.

I walk with E through this quiet paradise for just a moment before
    the dream ends.

Congrats CL! I love it! Seeing a different time is one of my favorite scenarios. Where the buffalo roam! Did you tell your son about the dream? Do any of your family try to LD?

(No need to worry about checking my DJ yet...my last two entries are too abbreviated to be an enjoyable read. I guess I need to find the time and motivation to put up more thorough DJ posts.)

Aww, such a fantastic ld! Totally loved your scene change time travelling experience.

Lol! Your neighbors must be really nice people then!

Nice! I love the scene changes. It sounds like movie magic and the scene in my mind seems like it was a fantastic LD. Have you been thinking about teleportation or did you just expect these changes to happened? It seems like you were really realxed in your approach. Im always trying to get to the root of these things so I can apply them to my own LDs.

      - Thanks, man! You know what? Reading your question actually caused me to tell my son about this lucid just tonight. I'd hesitated at first and kind of dragged my feet because I felt like the idea of the area where we live today being changed like this would stress him out.

When I told him, he did seem a little worried about it, but I'm really trying to share as much of my dream life with him as I reasonably can. You asked me whether anyone else in my family tries to LD, and E is the one who does! It's been a while now that he's been in a dry spell, but E's had a number of lucid dreams over time. I've been trying to share the craft with him, and even though he struggles with the dream control, he's really pretty good at getting lucid! It's very exciting for me!

@NyxCC - Thanks, Nyx, I'm really glad that you liked the dream! Afterward I thought of your lucid dare (to build a teleportation device, currently my #2 main lucid goal) and how when necessity struck, I can teleport. Now to just pack all of that power into a readily-available Lucidity Machine!

Edit: Oh and ha ha, yes my neighbors are very nice people! My kids and their grandkids sometimes play together. It would be very out of character for them to spray our house with mud.

@Xanous - Thank you, man, it really was a cool LD! The scenes and the scene changes, although sudden, were very vivid and striking.

You're bringing up some good points re: teleportation. I hadn't been directly thinking of teleportation in this situation but instead just felt the need to be away from this particular scenario. It was strange seeing the place that I live as this shattered, sort of post-apocalyptic wreck. And the thought of my son seeing that and me needing to explain it just sounded... tough. And when I wanted to leave, I was able to just do it without really trying.

It's like you said, a very relaxed kind of thing where I just did what I wanted in the moment without putting a great deal of thought to it. Almost like catching yourself by surprise, I guess, and never giving the rulebound side of ourselves the chance to interfere.

Sadly, I'm not quite sure how to apply this further. One lesson, I'd say, is thinking only of what we desire and nothing else. Not leave any space for limited thinking.

I think we're on to something here. Im going to work on this. I have had certain episodes similar to this but I was never sure how to aply it until now. I am always after the eye candy more than the goal. A very relaxed but expectant approach maybe help with dream control in general. Why does using the force come to mind?

Your last statement is a good place to start. Its like a type of meditation!

I thought you were going to go all Xanous on your neighbours for a minute there!

I'm glad you got to spend more lucid time with E!
I loved how you just enjoyed walking and admiring the scenery at the end, it sounds very peaceful.

Nice ideas forming here in the comments regarding dream control!

@CL, I would love to have that to share with my son. My son gets embarrassed if I dare talk about dreams to others with him around. "Dad's talking about his weird dreams again..."

@Xanous - Yes, well said! Isn't it funny just how much of lucid dreaming is like meditation? Daytime awareness feels very much like a form of active meditation.

@Dreamer - Thank you! Yeah, I was pleased to get more lucid time with E.

@fogelbise - Heh heh, I know the feeling! We've all probably gotten this reaction from someone somewhere. It helps that he's 5 and has had some experiences of his own to help him relate to what I'm on about.

      @ CL and Xanous,

Great discussion about teleportation. I have to say, I am really excited about this. CL has this goal as part of his dares, but it's also super awesome that teleportation seems to be happening spontaneously to each one of us recently. Reading about it in each other's journals may offer us an extra boost. I think this is the year we master it!
