    The Mesa

This was the second of two lucid dreams from last night, and a pretty close call for the South America Task of the Year. I'm getting closer! Just need to seal the deal! Very fun dream, success or no. Man, I want these bad.

    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #77: The Mesa

I'm driving under an overpass, approaching a stoplight. Out of nowhere, the car in front of me stops and I slam on the brakes. The brakes are super sluggish to respond and the car drifts to a very leisurely stop, stopping just a couple of feet from an embarrassing fender-bender.

The driver in front of me, a stout, balding man in his 40s with a shaved head, gets out of his car and circles around to the trunk. He shoots me a dirty look, pops the trunk open and pulls out a cooler. It takes a moment before it dawns on me, but I recognize him as a prominent DC from an earlier non-lucid dream and
    I become lucid.

I step out of the car, and the DC walks confrontationally toward me, like he's eager to argue about something. "Not right now," I say, and walk past him, emerging from the overpass into a bright day in some city's downtown. Beautiful glass buildings line the right side of the street and there's some sort of park to my left. Further ahead, a silvered, decorative archway spans the street.

Angel Falls is on my mind and I go for a quick Hulk-jump to try to get there. Instead of soaring into the clouds, though, I float gently up into the air, turning slowly around. It feels wonderfully relaxing and I lay back to stare up at the sunny sky, my arms flung out to the side. I float upward, a few feet away from one of those tall, windowed buildings. This feels fantastic to me and I start laughing, continuing to drift upward and slowly turn.

I'm having a ball with this, but I don't want to forget what I came to do. I tilt myself vertically again and start to rise more quickly, expecting that Angel Falls will be there on the other side of the building. As I shoot past the roof of the building, I see a broad bay dotted with distant boats. And looking out further over the bay, I see a mesa covered with greenery... one that looks just like the mesa that Angel Falls originates from!
(I looked it up and this mesa is called Auyan-tepui.)

I decide to sing to keep myself focused on the task, and I come up with the following: "I'm going to Aaaaaaangel Falls!! Hell yeah Aaaaangel Falls!" I'm oblivious to how horrible my lyrics are (and my voice sounds totally rockstar) so this all seems awesome to me. After a while I think about the "Halls" brand cough drops I'd had during WBTB and come up with some second "verse" that rhymes "Falls" with "Halls". I'm sure it sucked as bad as the others but I wish I could remember it.

I'm making good progress in my flight over the bay, and I cut past a boat that looks like it's loaded with tourists (most of whom are in bucket hats for some reason.) I'm excited, happy, and confident, but for some reason
I lose the dream and wake up. Really thought I had that one!!

Thanks! At least I'm demonstrating that I mean well, even if I haven't managed to complete any of these things in 2.5 months of trying.

But hey, that's 9.5 months still to go, yeah? A lot can happen in 9.5 months. (Or at least I'd better hope so!)

Aww man, I would love to be able to hear that song in its entirety. Oh well lol. But yeah, you were almost there!! It's a shame, but it still sounds like a really fun dream. Just a thought, how long were you flying for? It seems like it was a while. I just ask because my dreams always end when I fly for too long, I think it's just not stimulating enough to the senses to keep it going. But that might just be me!

Yeah, I tell you, if I could record it with that awesome rock star voice I somehow get in my dream-singing, I'd slap that baby up on Youtube. I'm sure that I can come up with some kind of menthol-referencing second verse. Maybe pitch it to Hall's for a really terrible ad campaign.

I think you are totally right here. I was getting way into the fun and experience of flying over a beautiful bay and listening to the sound of my own voice. Lots of narcissism and lots of fun, but precious little integration where I am reaching out and touching the dream. You know what I'm saying? So I think you are right on.

I probably should have just focused on the mesa and thought about how I am already there. Kind of like Robert Waggoner's "zooming in" style of flight. Hopefully I can remember to focus on this a bit more next time!

I'm a decently focused dude when it comes to dreaming but man, once I get going on these and start really having a good time, I can be very easy to distract.

Hahahaha, well make sure you post it here in the Youtube thread if you ever get that done!

Haha, yeah, you definitely have to pay attention to the dream or it'll disappear, like any individual part of it. But as long as you remember to focus on something other than yourself you can go nuts messing around with it, and like you said, directly focusing on where you're going helps a lot. What is this "zooming in" flight? It sounds very similar to what I do!

Yeah, exactly! I was going to say, "Or just fiddle around with your dream body" (such as rubbing hands together, etc.) But come to think of it, if I am in "the void" and I just fool with my dream body, I keep dreaming but tend to stay in the void. What I need to do is interact with some piece of the outward environment, even a piece that I invent.

Oh wow. Imagine Europe Task of the Month (the fight with a gladiator in the Colosseum.) If I get stuck in the dark, I've gotta try realizing that there's dirt on the ground and then rubbing it between my hands like Maximus does in "Gladiator". Could anything make me feel more macho and ready to wail on some enemy DC?

Waggoner recommends just looking at a place you can see and imagining yourself there. You simply look some place that you can see, and go there without getting caught up so much in the mechanics of flight. Okay, this whole discussion is ringing a pretty big bell. Did we just talk about this? Or did I watch you and Xanous talk about it? I dunno, but this was something I got from Xanous which he got from Waggoner and it really seems to work well. Not as much fun as flying like a bird, perhaps, but very effective and cool in its own way.

Haha, well good luck with that! That would be a pretty effective method of teleportation if you can bring the dream back into full focus from nothing but a single influenced perception. And having to rediscover it all would probably make it pretty vivid! That'd definitely be something worth mastering.

Ah, gotcha. Well, we have talked about flying before at some point. And I talked to NewArtemis about it the other day. And this is exactly how I fly, so that might be it. It is much more effective than regular flying when you're trying to get somewhere specific. It doesn't require any thought at all... though to be fair, neither does regular flying for me, so I may not be the best judge of that lol. But this is the method of flying I use when I'm just getting around, instead of focusing on flying. Usually when I fly in a lucid it's just because it's my most common method of transportation, not because I decided to spend the lucid flying or anything, you know?
