    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #103: Morgan Freeman

I'm in a library, laying down by some bookshelves and wearing nothing but some boxer shorts. A young, rather wimpy-looking guy with dark hair and glasses is looking through some books about thirty feet away, pretending not to notice me. I quickly throw my clothes on. I have no idea why I was unclothed, but I feel like I should explain myself to this guy.

I throw together a cover story, approach the guy and explain, "Don't worry! That part of the library is just where I like to recall any sexy dreams that I recently had." He visibly cringes. I cringe too. What in the world made me think that this was a good "explanation"? I feel very confused, both about my own dull-wittedness and the whole situation.

Embarrassed beyond belief, I mumble an apology and just sort of slink away into a different part of the library. After stewing in my shame for a few seconds, the strong emotion feels weird to me and
I realize with great relief that I'm dreaming.

No longer so defensive and inwardly-focused, I examine my surroundings. This part of the library is broad and open, with a floor of pure white marble, and a high, vaulted white ceiling. About fifty feet away is some kind of railing that surrounds a view of a lower floor. I walk toward the railing to check out this lower floor, but I'm distracted when I find myself walking next to Morgan Freeman. He's much shorter than I'd imagined (no taller than 5-foot-6) and moves slowly, as if decrepit and unwell.

"You're Morgan Freeman," I say. Astonishingly, I speak these words in Morgan Freeman's voice!

    "I am."

"Heeeeyyyyyyy," I say, testing out my amazing new voice. I do a theatrical hand-wave and really pile on the dramatic reading. "All of this... is a dream!"

He nods, smiling faintly. "Very nice."

"Everything sounds a lot better with this voice," I say. "How's this work? Is this dream teaching me how to talk like you? Am I still going to be able to sound like this when I wake up?"

He stops, giving me a cross look. "No."

I think for a moment about my goals. I can remember my primary goal of getting to the Alamo to catch up with Art, but I forget the Task of the Month and don't think to talk gibberish to Morgan Freeman. I'm planning on phasing through a wall in order to get outside or enter the void.

Morgan Freeman seems to sense that I'm about to leave and turns urgently toward me, suddenly speaking very rapidly. "Wait! Before you go, I need to tell you something that you have to do. You need to find Patricia [??some last name??] and you need to tell her about..." His voice becomes garbled and the scene breaks down. I expect to enter the void and transition from there to the Alamo but instead
    I wake up.

(I do know one Patricia but the last name had more syllables than hers does. I'm still stumped by this last part.)

Hearing your voice sound different in a dream is certainly interesting experience. I once dreamed that I heard my voice played back on a voice recording and actually liked the way it sounded. Just slightly different, though... I can only imagine how cool it would be if I could sing like Adele.

This gets me thinking... There really aren't any actresses that are known and loved for their voices like Mr. Freeman is for his, are there? At least, none come to mind. Maybe Cate Blanchett? Hmm.

So in the recording you sounded like a better version of your own voice? That's cool. I've not had that happen (for my speaking voice) in a dream yet. I think that the voice I "hear" in my head when I speak IWL is the improved version while everyone else listening to me suffers through an entirely different experience.

This was your speaking voice right? Have you ever had the occasion to sing in a dream? If not, it's definitely something that you'll want to try once you start hitting your lucids! On the occasions when I've done some singing in an LD, it sounds awesome! I am so not a rock singer in real life but man, in dreams at least I've got a great sound.

Great question on famous female voices! You're right that this seems very lop-sided. Obviously there are tons of famous female singing voices, but less for speaking. Marilyn Monroe's voice strikes me as super-famous, but without going way back in time it gets a lot tougher. Cate Blanchett's a good choice. I keep thinking Jennifer Tilly, but that only covers the "known" half... "loved" is a little less universal for hers, I guess.

I can name one - Marge Simpson. (AKA the voice of Julie Kavner.)

Ah, that's pretty good! Very distinctive and recognizable.

LOL. With great trepidation (and lots of checking over my shoulder to make sure the kids were otherwise occupied), I figured out the origin of this reference. That is hilarious.

Pretty much. Just bit deeper and more melodious.

No, I don't recall ever signing in my dreams. I should add that to my bucket list.

True about Tilly, LOL. Annoying as hell, IMO.

It's distinctive, I'll agree, but not "nice" in my opinion. Quite the opposite, in fact. There are a few others that stand out (Fran Drescher comes to mind), but no female equivalents of Morgan Freeman. His voice is unmistakable AND pleasant.

Oh yeah, definitely try singing when you get the chance! In one of my first LDs after I joined the Intro Class, I sang this completely original pop song (that was playing on Wife's iPod) and every DC in the street scene joined in too. It was pretty awesome.

And yeah, I'm afraid that Jennifer Tilly just isn't stacking up against Morgan Freeman. Katharine Hepburn maybe? I'm a gamer, so one of my personal favorites is Ellen McLain's GLaDOS from the Portal series. Her voice (with some post-processing) absolutely steals the show.

Apart from being cool, suave, and having an incredible voice, Morgan Freeman is of course also God, which lends a whole extra dimension to your dream. I always have crappy celebrities in my dreams, but well done to you!

Come to think of it, I had a DC who was a Morgan Freeman lookalike. He was a bully too!

I don't care about titty, or his voice. Just beware.

      Shame on him!
