      Not really.

I could believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that doing jumping jacks while waving my arms in the middle of the highway at an on coming 18-wheeler carrying a tank of gasoline is going to give me lucid dreams, but doesn't mean it will.

Contrary to popular beliefs, there are right and wrong ways to lucid dream. They're just a lot broader than merely following structure and procedure. A lot more to it.

Belief is a big part, yes. Even necessary. But it definitely isn't the central component.

I don't think that's what the OP is talking about. Alexander probably means that once you are already in a lucid dream and want to control that dream, as long as you believe it will work for you, then what you do will work. It doesn't mean believing something will give you an LD. Anyways, yes, that's it. As long as you're sure it'll work, it'll work. Dreams are cool like that.

I once got hit by a train and I knew I was going to get blown away. Instead I phased through it. So IMO this isn't bulletproof.

What is with this thread title? You did not conceive the idea that belief affects your control, this is a very well known concept.

      Its conceived btw.

Anyways: Everybody knows this. 'You Just gotta believe'... Sadly this doesn't work for *everybody*. Some people need a way of rationalizing. Sorry.
And now.. for a Stephen Strutmeyer Film...

Yeah, one minute you're dead sure your beanstalk is going to make it to the clouds, and the next minute the tree standing next to you snaps down and eats it. Being confident doesn't necessarily guarantee control.

It may not work every time, but it definately helps. If you 100% believe something is going to happen, it will certainly help your chances of that happening. You will find that nothing is guaranteed when it comes to dreaming. Confidence and self assurance are my main two tools when it comes to dream control. It doesn't always work, but it helps alot. Add in some improvisation and creativity when things go wrong and you are on your way to excellent dream control. Oh, and of course, practice.

      My Personal Belief

My idea is, by having enough lucid dreams, eventually what you want to go right, will go right. Therefore having that happen in you LD will cause your subconcious to absorb that and make itself believe that since it has happened before, it can happen again. So, in conclusion, if you have flown in the dream before, you will, or have way more of a chance of doing it again without putting any effort into again. Do not get me wrong though, there are plenty of ways to get that particular control triggered, but if you do not feel like putting any effort into it, then that is my personal opinion of your best bet.

I'm getting tired of saying it, but beliefs and expectations have nothing to do with dream control.

But if you want to waste your time and find out the hard way, be my guest.

your missing the point of his post, hes saying once your in a dream, to best keep hold of it, you need to believe in it.

and i find that quite true, through personal lucid dreaming experiences.

although it did fail me once, and was quite comical. i tried to jump through a wall believing i could phase through it.. well i hit the wall and woke up -.-

take this lucid dream for example

i realized i was dreaming when i was at my local park and there were kids there that i knew but shouldnt be there, anyways i went looking for a car to steal because i knew there was an uzi in the glove comparment and keys in ignition, and i wanted to do some GTA shit.

so i go walking and i see a white van, and for some odd reason i think to my self, theres ganna be a suitable car for me parked in the driveway behind that van (van was obstructing my view)

well soon as i passed the van, there was a green corvette in the driveway, and i remember my heart start racing and i was like i needa calm down or ima wake up.

so i get in the car and guess what, keys in the ignition and i pulled a blunt out of my pocket
(i just told myself "light that blunt up in your pocket" so i reach in my pocket and just pulled out a blunt.. anyways, i start up the car put it in drive and as i hit the gas my foot shakes in my bed and i wake up. was really mad.. but everything i thought was going to happen, did. aside from waking up.. but that was because i was getting very excited.

i have more experiences like these where i am kinda like "god" if you will, i can bend reality in my dreams to my will, and others i can not, its like im trapped in my dream, all i can do is run and jump n make due with whats in my dream surroundings.
