I'm probs just spamming this thread but I had to say this:

      Cataclysm.

      That is all.
cold hearted orb that rules the night,
removes the colors from our sight.
red is grey and yellow white,
but we decide which is right,
      and which is an illusion....

Maybe I'm too young, but dont seem to remember any subculture as described. I have been gaming since Goldeneye 64. Of course I played before then but nothing more than duckhunt, zelda, mario, ect. It was that game (Goldeneye) that lit the fire, and I got my 3 month old daughter a Wii and the new Goldeneye (i swear, its for her lol).

Yeah, that's definitely not the crowd I knew. I remember videogames were never looked down upon. Most everyone I knew played at least a few games.

Also I find the comments about gaming's fixation on short term gratification and graphics to be a bit strange considering the success of the bloated monstrosity that is the MMORPG genre, which is (sometimes unreasonably) long term and future-oriented with almost zero short term rewards and tends to have mediocre to terrible graphics. Not to mention the biggest selling consoles are the Wii and the DS. Certainly not the two that jump to mind when I think of high-end graphics.

i have to say that a lot of games go through this thing i call The Jumbler. The Jumber is when they take one game and mix it up and make a new game that you're sure you've already played before. there aren't many really good inovative games that have come out recently. the technology is at a stand still and untill we can get better technology the games are going to get worse and worse, but it will get better before you know it. right now they are still making some good games. like i heard that they are working on another elder scrolls (SICK!!!!). The first Fable was amazing... then they didn't make a very good sequal. i mean, if you've ever played fable II you know that you've never died and the same with the new one, you can't die (i had to use a potion once through the whole game...). and 3-d gaming sound like a good idea... but the games are going to be exactly the same. once things go holographic, then games will get crazy!

Realizing the potential they have, they select their paths which weave in and out to make the good and the bad, the pure and the corrupt...

There have been numerous absolutely kick-ass games in the last couple years, some of them not cutting-edge at all. It's not the tech that makes good games, but the creativity that goes into them.

yes, i agree, but there has not been a whole lot of inovative thinking recently. there have been a few good games that have come out of this decade, but most have been pretty shity.

games from the 90's were amazing!!!

I'm a pretty casual gamer, and hardly gamed at all in the early oughts, but to name a few amazing games of the past few years: Mass Effect 1 & 2, Fallout 3 & New Vegas, Rock Band (especially Beatles), Starcraft 2, Civ 4 and 5, Sims 3... oh, and the MMO: all of them. I would include a lot of the simple timekill games, too. Plants vs. Zombies is a RTS my mom could play, and would probably like--that's amazing! I haven't played Super Meat Boy, but that looks pretty sweet, too, and uses Megaman-era tech. By all accounts the Halo and Bioshock games are off the hook, too, though I'm not much of a FPS guy.

The '90s had a lot of good adventure games, which I haven't really seen (or been looking for) in the past decade, and good martial arts fight games, but RTS, FPS and RPG have gone light years beyond what was around then.

I think there were better games in the 90's than now. I get excited when I think of those games. Nowadays I can only think of a few. But you really just have to look. I'm sure there's more shit ones now, but there's still around the same amount of good ones as there used to be.

Proxide, you're right about the technology thing. Games are becoming too advanced to actually play them on the technology we have now.
Crysis is a perfect example, 99% of people still couldn't play it on their computer. Even excluding the people who don't play games.

haha very true. I didn't mind the story though. I think people like saying the story is shit but the graphics are good. Same thing happened with Avatar. Neither have mind blowing stories but they aren't shit.

-near goth style cloths. Mostly a color palate of Black, gray, and blue. A good amount of piercings. extremely white skin. Black hair. Girls possibly had some highlights or something but not dyed to some insane color. Guys normally were not muscular at all.

-They acted different from Emo, scene, or Goth people. It was not about attention and there were not the exaggerations (not to insult anyone belonging to these subcultures, but a lot of people dress like this because it draws attention). Gaming was looked down upon and not a common thing.

-Played what I would consider "real games", ones that were more in depth or with a darker tone. Games like Morrowind, Starcraft, Warcraft(1,2,and 3) Vanilla WOW and TBC, Everquest I and II, Warhammer games, Zelda (Majoras Mask and previous), Soul caliber, Star wars Battle front, and Half life.

      - These were the kind of people you would see working at gamestop or Rhino in my town before they were bought out.
      Sounds like casuals to me
