      Australians LOOK HERE URGENT!

I don't know if you've heard already, I found out about 2 months ago but decided to post it here now.

This moron minister is trying to get a 'clean feed' passed on our internet. It's going to cost about $140 mil. It will slow our internet down and block all your favourite porn. They're also trying to get it to work for 'off-internet' things like torrents and p2p programs.

You can use a proxy to get around it but who the hell wants to go to the trouble.
I sent the idiot an e-mail and I got a generic response telling me to go to a site and see the FAQ, of which there was none. They can't even build their own site properly and they want to block OUR access to the internet!

There was a pdf with all this shit about it which will enrage you. I decided reluctantly, because I thought they may have some spyware in it or some government bullshit (it didn't I don't think), to download it and I thought I'd put it here for all you aussies to have a look at.

      Just in case this happens:

So long to the Australian members who can't figure out proxies for the life of them.

you're in Australia, tommo? otherwise, I'm not really sure what you're upset about.

if anything happened there, I don't see how the jurisdiction for this type of change would reach the US.

I seriously think nobody in the US (or any other country) has anything to worry about.

The only place I know of where they censor the internet is China. *they literally hand-pick which sites are approved and not approved by the government.

I live in Canada and that pisses me off!!! (But everything pisses me off...)

Proxies are fairly simple to use. There are several browser based ones where all you have to do is enter the desired address.

I generally use PHP Proxy when I have the need. http://www.phproxy.org/

Although sites like that will likely get blocked as well, so you may have to install some dedicated software.

Yeh I am in Aus lol.
Actually England tested it as well, I don't know if they still have it.
But ONE person modified a wikipedia article and the whole country got banned. lmao it's just ridiculous.

Cusp - I'm glad you're pissed off. Makes me feel like people actually care about the indecencies in this world even if it doesn't effect them.
I know how to use proxies, I usually just do it through the browser or an add-on for Firefox. The add-on is good coz you can set a list since they expire/go off pretty quickly. But thanx for putting that there if others come in.

Oh how you will miss that sweet sweet porn.
heh, I'm good. I got a life supply.

      Old news is oooold.

Still. I agree. It's a ridiculous idea that:
      1. Won't work.
      2. Will cost a /lot/.
      3. Will cause internet speeds to slow by 20 to 80 %.

No shit it's old you came here like a month after I started this thread. not really but.

Yeah I said I found out about it ages ago, anyway a lot of people don't know about it.

I just got news today that telstra (the company that owns all the phone lines/powerlines in the country) said they aren't going to implement it. There goes 120 million dollars....

I heard about that a while ago. I doubt it's going to go ahead. I can imagine a lot of people would be pretty pissed over that, plus the government has nothing to gain from such a move.

And wasnt Kevin Rudd promising BETTER internet at the election?!

Also, come on. It cant happen. When they tried to get that parent control filter for everyone in Australia, some kid went on the news and hacked it in like 5 minutes. Itd be pretty stupid, I doubt it will go ahead.

      gov·ern·ment (gvrn-mnt)
      noun.1. Idiocy
      2. Exercise of authority in a political unit.

they don't listen to a single word the public says. That's why after complete disagreement from the public they are still trying to get it passed. After no compliance from telstra they are still trying to get it passed. It's bullshit, as long as they impress a few parents and the minister idiot gets his way they are happy.

Also there is always something to gain. Money.

Someone already got to it, but...

      1. It won't work. ( Who chooses what to filter... )
      2. It won't work. ( Since when were Proxies illegal? )
      3. It won't work. ( Since when was Encryption illegal? )

Essentially if the filter is put in place, despite the OBVIOUS REPURCUSSIONS it imposes, the internet will futher slow from international servers, there will be rage and protests about any range of sites being blocked. And so on...

They will attempt to block Piracy, and Pornography once the "cp" filter is in place, which will be the lamest rubbish ever, and it won't even be funny.

Rest assured, FAILBOAT is FAIL. ( That means, something that is defective by design, is faulty. )
