When you sleep, the logic centers of your brain go to sleep, too. Not thinking logically is the greatest inhibitor to lucid dreaming. If you insist on DILD, try getting in the habit of RCing during the day. RC at certain triggers, cues, or events that show up in your dreams regularly. It will take time to work...LDing takes patience to get the hang of. Keep trying, and it will eventually work. If you aren't seeing the results you desire after some time, go ahead and try a different method. Naiya's MILD and Mzzkc's WILD are two techniques I recommend looking into. Also, any tutorial written by BillyBob is solid gold.

OP: This is the fundamental problem with DILD, and why most serious lucid dreamers don't bother with it. WILD (as a general group of techniques) is what the "professionals" use.

DILD requires a daytime commitment, it's unreliable at the best of times, and it often leaves the user only half way to lucidity, even when it works. Useless.

There are plenty of people who DILD regularly. It can be just as reliable once you start realizing the nature of your dreams.

It's really quite misleading to say that no serious lucid dreamers bother with DILD.

This is a pretty detrimental message to a beginning LDer. It has nothing to do with reality checks; they're only used to confirm that you're dreaming! It's all about becoming aware in the dream. The only reason people are constantly confused as to how they can reality check is because the tutorials are written that way (IMO, should be rewritten to include a bigger emphasis on awareness).
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.
