Lucid dreaming, how much farther can we go?

So we all know lucid dreaming has come such a long way with all the research scientists have done. And its awesome. But how much farther can we go? What do you guys predict in the future, like 10 years from now?

Well in 10 years I'll think lucid dreaming will have become mainstream. It will be a poplar topic on TV shows and will bring focus on dreams to the western world.

I also think it will be highly commercialized. Tons of people selling "instant LD" books and DVDs.

Dreamviews will need 20 dreamguides to keep up if it's still around.

      Great topic.

Actually I'm not so sure it will become that popular. With more people realising the potentials, there will be more people abusing it. "Experts" will claim it's dangerous for you, and a hobby which is free. I don't see how the entertainment business would not pay someone to claim something like that. Sure books and movies and quickguides and supplements can be made, but I don't think there will be enough to be made for it to go huge. If it gets big, I think it will be discouraged after a while.

Just think how far the human race has come in the last 100 years. Take space exploration for example, or technology.
Last night I dreamed I ate a ten-pound marshmallow, and when I woke up the pillow was gone.

Matte I think it will be commercialized by people trying to make a quick buck. People can be very impatient and just want to LD as fast as possible. Lucid dreaming should always be free an anyone who pays for anything other than maybe a DJ is crazy.

This is very true. Similar to meditation, people might know about things but are just too lazy to pursue them. And America is only getting more impatient.

I think one of the next steps is to be able to WILD whilst awake / use the brain's ability of creating virtual worlds for something constructive in the real world. E.g.: instead of just imagining the next program I have to write and how all the different systems and screens and functions link together, I could see and hold a stable virtual model in my head and manipulate it as clearly as a dream world and thus be able to deliver a much better product with such an overview.

Another step is for someone figure out all the variables and come up with a magic pill / method that works for everyone, every time, without fail. And then find a way to commercialize and direct the entertainment aspect of lucid dreaming. E.g.: instead of watching a TV series, you can experience a loosely scripted series of dreams through suggestions at the start of each lucid dream.

Jeez this seems impossible. Compare it to something that has been done before.

Coder is the perfect example of what the future will hold. Everyone trying to find instant lucidity. This isn't Tv, you don't just turn it on and have success. People these days are too impatient in my opinion. Not to slam you coder but I don't think anything you said will ever happen or is possible.

WILDs, lotsa DILDs off FAs, plus some DEILD chaining.

      More luck than anything else.

Of course, the average length of each one was only around 4 minutes or so. I'd have much preferred experiencing two or three lengthy LDs instead (lengthy meaning an hour or more of perceived time).

I think that there will be a machine that allows you to share dreams with people...

      Hehe get the reference?

I think there will be something that lets most people have LDs most of the time. I'm not sure if it will be partly electronic or have the use of drugs but the world is very interconnected and impatient, in a way there are thousands of people working on this around the clock. If there is a way to do this, somebody is going to find it.

It sounds cynical, but I think this is close to right, especially with the meditation comparison. Through the use of clever advertisement I can definitely see LDing becoming commercial, but I really can't see it becoming anything more than a trend.

It might even be the new big thing for a month or two, but after that it will fade into the subconscious of the populous. In the end only the people who are actually willing to put in the dedication to dreams will stick with it. Keep in mind that most people don't care about dreams enough to see devotion to lucid dreaming as anything more than silly.

Of course only time will tell.

What I hope people will discover... Shared dreams. Being able to roam dream worlds with a friend just sounds like too much fun. Who knows maybe someone on these forums some day will be able to teach us all how to do it. Some people already claim they can

      Awesome topic!

In ten years from now, I forsee LDing becoming slightly mainstream. I think the science of sleep would have advanced to the stage where there will be machines that can directly induce any of the stages of sleep (NREM1, REM, etc). I think it'll be expensive technology though, so only rich people/the people behind the technology will have easy access to them. Regular middle class people will have to go to specialist 'sleep centers' or something to have a go. Think of it as somebody with £200 owning a treadmill, but somebody with £5 going to the gym.

the powers that be wont let main stream adopt lucid dreaming. when you lucid dream or obe your accessing the astral plain consciously & there you have access to unlimited information. Western societies like to control people so they rather keep you unconscious and spending money with out you being aware of how truely great you are in the larger scheme of things, imho.

Which is why I don't see it being heavily commercialized. It's a fascinating thing that most people are like "Wow that's awesome, I want to do that!" until they realize the work that you have to put into it and then they either don't pursue it or give up quickly. People are generally quite lazy and if it doesn't give a quick payoff they're not likely to do it.
