What is the purpose of false awakenings?

I have a rather simple question. What is the purpose of false awakenings?

I have had them many times, but I never really thought about WHY they happening. It's like the mind is purposely trying to you. If you are having a nice lucid dream and you really wake up, I can understand that. Maybe it was just time for you to wake up. But a false awakening? It's like the mind is just trying to mess with you. And if it is, why?

I'd like to hear people's opinions on this.

      Thanks

I believe that once a dream is about to end you sometimes realize in the final seconds that you've been infact dreaming and expect to wake up. When another dream comes along it builds upon your expectations of what's going to happen and voila, you're in your bed

We all wake up, everday. So maybe it's like a dream sign for everyone? Kinda hard to explain.

My experiences have been different than this. Most, if not all, of my false awakenings occur when I already lucid. However, one thing you said was about expectations. When I am lucid, I expect to go from a lucid dream to an awakened state. Changing expectations could cause fewer false awakenings.

I agree with Matt. You feel the dream ending and expect to wake up but instead..false awakening! I don't think there is much more to it.
