I had an interesting dream one time that was caused by having only a few hours of sleep. When you're in the early stages of sleep, your REM cycles are shorter, and I hypothesize that some dreams are not very vivid due to this.
I dreamt concepts and ideas, rather than painting out a scene and creating objects to imagine it. I was focusing more on vivid thoughts than objects. Perhaps your experience was similar? Were you seeing the silhouettes for what they were doing and what they meant, rather than who they were?
