Methods of changing disturbing dreams through Lucid dreaming.

I often have disturbing dreams featuring rape, incest, beastiality and sometimes though thankfully rarely pedophillia and thats just some of the dreams I have. One of my most common dreams is family trying to rape me. I almost experience the same feelings of guilt and shame as if I was really raped making it sometimes awkward to be around my brother in real life though we are close. Lately I have been able to become Lucid during some of the dreams enough to make me run from the situation but often not stop it.

So heres my question. What techniques can I use to stop these disturbing dreams by maybe influencing my dream characters away from there goal to rape me and to change the scenario back to a happy one?

The same thing happened to me but the only advice I can give is just will it to stop... If you are lucid force them to stop. Not much else I know of.

      Mind if I try again?
You have a lot more experience than me and I may be trying to push water up a hill or suggesting things you have tried but I can relate and feel as I should help.

      -Auto suggestion
      -Therapy
      -Meditation (much cheaper than therapy)
-Try to analyze your dreams, they probably don't mean any thing but it is worth a try.

If nothing works mentally look at your physical sleeping conditions. For me, the most undesirable things (nightmares, grotesque scenes, etc) happen when over heating.

Are you stressed in any way?
Are you worried about your life? Relationships? Job? Pets? Colour of the ceiling? Any thing?

Some thing just popped into my head...Are your in dream family members detailed as they are in waking life?

Hmmm Dream Incubation might be a good method. It means that you decide before hand what you want to dream with the help of some method, I used to do it as a child and that was what later on got me interested in lucid dreaming. My method was weird but as a child anything is possible... I put my right hand under my pillow and told myself that if I do that and then think of what I want to dream, I will dream it. So I thought of Harry Potter and then fell asleep. The next thing I knew I were side to side with Ron and Hermione and I were Harry Potter lol...

I don't use it now and I don't know any method of dream incubation, but google is your friend =) And there is probably a guide on Dreamviews somewhere.

      Good luck =)

      Hmmm...

      Perhaps a new association?

Dream images often worj with associations. For example, if I dream about driving a car I associate that with changing gears for the transmission which I then associate with riding a bicycle. Nearly every time I start out driving I end up on my bicycle which operates like a car.

Perhaps a new association with your family...one that doesn't involve rape.

Sometime in the middle of the day, perhaps following lunch, try examining the dream or your feelings about your specific family members. Think about the person and how they act, smell or speak. Now associate their image with something else, or an activity that is less vulgar.

You can also examine the dream in detail and review it over and over until it seems like a list of action after action to the point where you know what to expect. Now add in a twist or a change of scenery, like the phone ringing or the bad person tripping on some object, something simple. By adding this image as an expected event it can manifest in your dream as an expected change allowing your unpleasant dream to take a new turn.

Just something new to think about.

When lucid, have you tried asking them why they doing it?

Robert Waggoner in his "Gateway to inner self" suggests to offer to the scary character love and understanding. His theory is, that the scary character is a part of us, that we rejected, because we don't like it or don't understand it. (Like a bad trait, we don't want to have so we maybe deny having it.)

Than the scary part may change into something non-threatening and perhaps even merge with the dreamer to form one whole person again.

But if you look at it from non-lucid perspective, is your family forcing you to do something you don't want to do? Like go to school of their choice and not yours, or something like that?

My dad is controlling in real life and in my dreams forces me to stay home or will try to rape me. Its only males who try to rape me. I spoke to my brother and told him you are my brother a meaningful thing as we are close and he always says he will never hurt me. My brother has never hit me he has tried to control me a year ago when we lived together but that stopped and now all he wants to do is protect me. Though with his gf he gets angry and hits her once choked her. I've been having these rape dreams before me and my brother lived together.

Nightmares are naturally occurring dreams and they are usually warning signs. And for the more aware dreamer, the sign is vividly clear. Feelings however, are not always directly descriptive of waking reality.

My 2 cents: The first step in my mind is to accept that your mind is communicating something. Next, figure out what is being communicated. Whether that means interpret the dream signs, explore lucidly, or even trying to recall during the day.

The central purpose of anything of these techniques is to firstly, build a foundation of confidence. Secondly, take responsibility to confront and resolve the issue that is causing the nightmare.

The technique I used as a child resembles Robert Waggoner's idea. That is to accept that which is in the nightmare as your Self. Send positive vibes, and if you have trouble producing positive vibes, make a joke out of the dream. Make fun of the monsters face even as it rips your limbs off.

One more thing: Try not to wake yourself up from the nightmare...
