It's not how often you do them, but that you remember to do them at all. The important thing is to get it into a habit. But that's not enough you need to do them properly, because it should be a habit of careful exploration. Imagine that you are actually dreaming when you are doing them, how would you think of yourself and the dreamsituation if you were in fact dreaming? For example one might think like this:
"Ah what's around me now, isn't important unless I really know it is real, so now I need to see if I am dreaming" --> count the fingers --> looks normal? Check the surroundings and be aware what is happening and then count the fingers again. When it is a habit to think this way, you will hopefully do this in the dream as well.
