I'm 23, trying to get a computer science degree, was a party animal until last semester, now I'm getting my life straightened out, and yeah, I'm also an Oneironaut.

My advice, if they reacted weird, just don't mention it to those people anymore. You probably won't be able to convince them otherwise. The great majority of people I talked about LDing to looked at me funny, so after I realized I couldn't convince them of anything related to that, I don't talk to them about it anymore.

That's the beauty of lucid dreaming, it's all in your head... all you. Aside from keeping a dream journal and doing reality checks, no one needs to know about it, but deep inside, you know how awesome it is, and what all those people are missing. Read up on the quote of my signature...

There will always be those people who refuse to accept the notion that one could truly be conscious in their dreams. To those people, lucid dreaming is along the lines of astrology, tarot cards, palm reading and other far-fetched, unprovable ideas. They view it as simple fairy tales. What they don't realize is that LDing is not only absolutely true and possible but that it has been scientifically proven beyond doubt. It's not science fiction - it's science fact.

You and we know what they are missing. They never will if they choose not to believe. It's kind of like prayer, voodoo and other mind games: It only works if you believe it's possible (as a general rule). LDing is no mere placebo but, it does help to believe in its possibility.

Hey, I'm 39 and I recently told my best friend (since junior high!) about my little hobby. And, I did it because he was freaked out about having SP once or twice. After I told him about it, he looked at me like he felt a little sorry for me that I could think something so stupid. He's not holding it against me, but still....

I don't tell people about it, generally. I find that there are those who are "initiated" -- LDers, both accidental and purposeful -- and those who are not. To the uninitiated, it is mere fantasy. To the initiated, it is great fantasy. =)

I'm "awesome years old", digital artist, jewelry maker, cupcake lover, gamer, cosplayer, lolita lover, loner, ex-party animal, weird crazy person :p, heart broken and a bit lost, and an Oneironaut!

Nice topic BTW, I wish more people would have answered your question.

Just tell them it is a scientific proven FACT and not any new age or religious hooha and feel sorry for them.

Also might work if you stopped smearing graphiti everywhere and stopped typing in text message speak.

What films do you make? Do you have to do a film for a graduation thing? Can we see your films online? Do you want to be a writer, director, or special effects artist?

      I love film.

I'm a 46 year old father of two, married 19 years, engineer, entrepreneur, 'net freak, photog, artist and general eclectic.

      Fits right in with me.

"So, um..." (somebody trying to make light conversation with me) "What's the hobby d'joure?"

      "Lucid Dreaming."

Amazing how that works. Once you are a certain age people just don't argue.

Oh, and here's a morale booster for you I am 90% certain that Wes Craven who created those Nightmare on elmstreet movies lucid dreams and creates his films in dreams before he films. I think I remember him saying something on a talk show. I think it was David Letterman. This was YEARS ago so don't quote me on that. You'll have to write him and ask.

Good paper on Lucid Dreaming your friends might read: http://www.orthogonal.com.au/hobby/lucid/index.htm

http://wescraven.com or http://www.wescraven.com you might could do a short film on lucid dreaming and ask Craven for a few words. Or write a paper on dreams and film. The article link has some notes on art and film from dreams.

      Rock On.

I'm 15 and I'm learning to lucid dream. I'm a gamer, car enthusiast, free-runner, tricker, and I like to draw from time to time. (though not very good)

Yeah, when I first told my mom about LDing I think she thought I was crazy, I didn't like that feeling (but I openly admit I am)...
(...now that I think about it maybe she was just surprised, I went out to breakfast with her not too long ago and she said her mom was into that kind of stuff and she thought it was interesting...oh well)

Now when I tell people about lucid dreaming, which isn't often, I lure them into it. which goes sort of like this...

Me- ever want to do something not possible in reality?
Friend- hmmm... I always wanted to fly, with big angel wings, ya know?
Me-What if I told you you can?
      Friend- Yeah right...
      Me- honestly, try lucid dreaming.
*I continued to tell him about LDing*

      True conversation BTW

and then im called a LOCO(spanish for crazy).
i should try that approach though

People are always skeptical about what's not "normal" to them. It happens. Enjoy your fun, reap the rewards, and leave your friends out of it unless they come to you or you can tell they're ready for it.

I agree, i read in a book about how everyone has their "safe house" in their heads about reality to which they retreat to when they see something that is not "normal" and they dont agree with. i.e. if someone saw a flying blue elephant and then said "wait there has to be an explanation", they are retreating to their place of safety. Instead of accepting it as the reality that is there they look all over for an explanation and a cause. i hope everyone here however is a person willing to accept reality as it is happening and question it but not willing cut it into pieces to show that they are not dreaming.
