Video Gamers Have Power Over Their Dreams

Live Science reports that researchers say playing video games before bedtime may give gamers an unusual level of awareness and control in their dreams which could provide an edge when fighting nightmares or even mental trauma.

'If you're spending hours a day in a virtual reality, if nothing else it's practice,' says Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist at Grant MacEwan University in Canada who says that hard core gamers represent the leading edge of immersion in virtual worlds that increasingly has come to define a large part of contemporary entertainment and communication.

'Gamers are used to controlling their game environments, so that can translate into dreams.' One intriguing theory holds that dreams are a sort of threat simulation where nightmares help organisms hone their skills in a protective environment, and ideally prepare organisms for a real-life situation.

To test that theory, Gackenbach conducted a study using independent assessments that coded threat levels in after-dream reports and found that gamers experienced less or even reversed threat simulation (in which the dreamer became the threatening presence), with fewer aggression dreams overall.

In other words, a scary nightmare scenario turned into something 'fun' for a gamer.

Playing video games before bed also has the nasty effect of disturbing peoples' internal sleep rhythms, but this is a pretty interesting article.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

It's the unnatural backlight that emnates from the television or computer; it resets your internal sleep clock. I can fetch the article I got it from, but there's more than one.

I've heard this also. And when doing WBTBs you shouldnt go on your PC.
But then again, i have a 100" screen on my bedroom wall which i use EVERY night right before sleep and i have never had any sleep problems.

Lucky. If I'm watching a screen an hour before bed I can't fall asleep for hours.

my VOSCA technique is sort of like a WBTB. You wake up two hours early, then stay up for two hours, and go to sleep for the time lost.

DUring this time I am on PCs the entire two hours and fifteen minutes.

Ah, sorry, I thought you meant that it had a direct connection to video games. But you were talking about the effects of staring on a screen.

Explains why I have so much fantasy and sci-fi realted dreams.
'The petals dance through the wind,
The crimson blood shimmers on the snow,
The shattered heart weeps of hidden sorrow.
And over a pure white sky,
      rises a black moon.'

I've noticed that video games have indeed influenced my dreams, but I've also heard about how the lights from screens mess up your sleeping, so I usually try to stay away from games before bed, especially since having enough sleep is one of the keys to LDing for me.

I don't know, I have great sleep and sometimes even sleep with the t.v. still on. Urkel always makes me drowsy. Maybe it depends on the person and the t.v.

I can NEVER sleep with disturbance. Although I am a very deep sleeper, it takes absolute peace and quite to make me drift off to sleep, unless I am REALLY tired. My bedroom is always so dark that no matter if my eyes are open or closed, it is the same. I would say that my bedroom is actually darker than when I close my eyes, because I can see the pinkish flesh thats on the underside of my eyelids. It is also so quiet that sometimes I can hear my own heartbeat, or even the ticking of the clock. That's just how I like to sleep.
Try playing epic games on a handheld console like the PSP, IPhone, your mobile, or something else before going to bed, and turn it off when you are about to sleep. It REALLY has a lot of effect on your dreams. Believe me, I have tried.
