      Placebo effect (Wow!)

      Placebo effect

I just watched this on TV (Wow!):

Derren Brown: Fear and Faith Part 1:

The first part of a two-part event, Fear and Faith is a fascinating view into the "Placebo Effect" and how much a human brain can effect ones neurology through the power of beleif. This show is however an episode on to itself, and really more of a documentary.*

This is the foundation in which Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), co-created by Dr. Richard Bandler and Dr. John Grinder, is all about. As a side note, hypnosis or guided mental imagery is often used in a therapeutic way to help those interested in real human 'change-work'. A huge thanks to Derren Brown for making this information available to the general public!

NOTE: A Hypnotic "Snap Induction" or "Handshake Pattern Interrupt Induction" is done by Derren towards the end of this video (begins at 40:18). Derren is EXTREMELY GOOD at this induction, and YES it does work on everyday people, NOT everyone.... Those folks whom are 'Super Suggestive' will fall into "Trance" just as shown in this show, and seem to believe they are kind of 'living a dream', so unless you've seen this for yourself, please DO NOT disbelieve!*

Derren brilliantly uses emotional elicitation to provoke a religious experience in an atheist. In this episode he employs auditory, visual, emotional as well as spatial anchoring and explains to the audience what he is doing as he demonstrated his NLP mastery. If you've ever questioned the power of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) or wondered where God really comes from simply watch and learn.*

Derren Brown's 4th one-hour special for 2012, he now examines Fear and Faith.... GOD*

Hey I read your post. I am very interested in the potential to use expectation/(non religious)faith to tame the unruly inner self. but how is it to be done?
      Thanks for the post

      Fascinating documentary

about the science and psychology of placebos, featuring members of the the [b]Harvard /b]Placebo Study Group,

      "Placebo: Cracking the Code"

examines the power of belief in alleviating pain, curing disease, and the healing of injuries.

The placebo effect is a pervasive, albeit misunderstood, phenomenon in medicine. In the UK, over 60% of doctors surveyed said they had prescribed placebos in regular clinical practice.

In a recent Times Magazine article, 96% of US physicians surveyed stated that they believe that placebo treatments have real therapeutic effects.

Work on the placebo effect received an intellectual boost when the Harvard Placebo Study Group was founded at the beginning of 2001. This group is part of the Mind-Brain-Behavior Initiative at Harvard University, and its main characteristic is the interdisciplinary approach to the placebo phenomenon. The group is made up of 8 members:

      1) - Anne Harrington (Historian of Science at Harvard),

      2) - Howard Fields (Neuroscientist at Univ. of California in San Francisco),

      3) - Dan Moerman (Anthropologist at Univ. of Michigan),

      4) - Nick Humphrey (Evolutionary Psychologist at London School of Economics),

      5) - Dan Wegner (Psychologist at Harvard),

      6) - Jamie Pennebaker (Psychologist at Univ. of Texas in Austin),

      7) - Ginger Hoffman (Behavioral Geneticist at Harvard) and

      8) - Fabrizio Benedetti (Neuroscientist at Univ. of Turin).

Acclaimed documentary about the science of the placebo effect. Featuring the Harvard Placebo Study Group:

      1) - Anne Harrington,

      2) - Nicholas Humphrey,

      3) - Fabrizio Benedetti,

      4) - Dan Moerman,

At the 8 minute (08:00) point Bruce Mosely (bone surgeon) says:

"I'mconvinced that a large part of the benefit is from the placebo effect, possibly all".

And if he is right, Bruce Mosely Mosley could be doing himself out of a job.

Back-up to the 4 minute (4:00) point to see how 2 war veteran's were put into the placebo group for "fake" knee surgery and not told for two years after the "fake" bone surgery. Both still walking freely and without pain 6 years later.

      This YouTube is soooo fascinating.

(39:00) ...And there's one case that stands out, not of cancer but, in a way, even more impressive.

It's a case which has profound significance for those trying to crack the placebo code because it's vivid proof of just now powerful suggestion can be. (39:20)

      (...)

      East Grinstead, Sussex UK,
      Queen Victoria Hospital, 1952
A young Doctor named Albert Mason was working as an anethnatist, unaware that an interest in hypnosis was about to changehis life forever.

      (40:00)***

      Doctor Albert Mason

One day I was about to give an anesthetic and the case was wheeled in and the boy, he was a young man of 15, he was covered in millions of warts.

The surgeon had been trying to graft skin from the boys chest which didn't have warts, onto his hands. And he was, kind-of disgusted because he had, really, made the boys hands a bit worse.

So, I said to the surgeon being, (me) being young and rather cocky, that um

"Why don't you treat him with hypnotism?"

(cos I though this was warts)

(4:40) And the surgeon looked at me, pityingly

      (4:44) and said

      "Why don't you?"

and walked out of the theater.

      (...)

(the young doctor Mason did just that. A week later boy returned)

      Doctor Albert Mason

Well that's good, let's show Mr Moor, (the surgeon). So, we took the boy to the theater and Moor was operating at the time. We held up both the boys arms, one untreated the other untreated.

And Moor looked, and his eyes became like saucers, and he handed his knife over to his assistant, and came out, and looked at this, and he said,

      Good God

      I said

      "I told you warts go"

      He said

      "Warts?" This isn't warts,

      he said

      this is

      congenital ichthyosis erythmederma (of) brock

He was born with it. It's incurable.

(What Albert Mason had done was impossible) (42:30)

      Reader

I put "congenital ichthyosis erythmederma brock" into Google. Here is the link.

Orphanet: Congenital bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma Epidermolytic hyperkeratosis

I will finish the last few minutes later ... It is nearly midnight and I want to go to "chat" before I turn-in.

This young boy had been born with a condition which made his skin thickend and cracked like an elephant's hide. Victims suffer endless skin infections which ultimately prove fatal. Most die in childhood.

But Albert Masons patient lived. New pink skin grew on almost all of his body. It saved his life.

And the young Londoner who had been badly bullied at school because of his strange appearance was able to go home to a normal life,

(43:00) purely because of the power of suggestion which is a key component of the placebo effect.

When the case was published in the British Medical Journal in 1952 the worlds media went mad.

      Doctor Albert Mason

Thousands of people phoned in. They had to put a special operator on the switch-board. Letters poured-in. And overnight I was in this bewildering situation.

Time magazine photographed me and put me (on the front page) next to Catherine Hepburn.

Every congenital (?) within a thousand miles came. There wasn't many. It's very rare disease.

And I attempted to treat them.

None of the others responded at all. Not a smign. (53:58)

Mason, never again, was able to repeat that first incredible success.

      (44:00)

And he thinks he knows why.
