Realize I am dreaming - becoming Lucid

Hello there ! This is my first real post.
Uhm... I thought about going Lucid and such, and there's one thing I can't really grasp..
When I dream, I often just do things, pretty much flow with the storyline and follows it blindly, like watching a movie in 1st person kind of. Normal dreaming I would say.

My question is, how do I actually realize I am dreaming (to become Lucid) if I cannot even control what I do in my dreams? If I cannot control my thoughts or my actions, how can I realize something??

Hope my question was clear, thank you in advance ! So happy to have found this forum.

Awareness is the keystone of lucid dreaming. No matter how many reality checks you do, or dream signs you discover, you'll just pass over them if you're not conscious and aware in your dreams. It's important to become skeptical and aware that you could be dreaming at any moment. When you're dreaming, it feels just like real life, and you don't question anything. This is what you have to do in real life. Actually, you could be dreaming right now, so look around, do a reality check, and focus on your breathing.

When you get a few lucids, you'll wonder to yourself, "how did I not notice I was dreaming before?" It's because you weren't aware until that instant, which is how most lucidity starts.

      Good luck.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Hmmm alright, not entirely clear to me still but sure helped abit.
So basically I have to learn to be skeptical in real life and learn how to act in real life to manage to act the same way and be sceptical in the dream world aswell ,
and that is the key to actually reaching awareness and Lucidity ?

      Thank you.
