Some people do manage to go into from being awake, straight into a dream without even realizing it or having no signs that you're going to sleep. Most people enter SP first where you feel a number of different things. The first usually being a tingling or vibration throughout your body then a heavy weight over you. When you're trying to WBTB, just let your mind drift and don't focus on anything in particular.

Personally I do a mantra at night, repeating "I will have a lucid dream" and "I will do a reality check". Even if it has no real effect, if you truly believe it will help (as I do), it can add a placebo effect.
