What does it actually mean to wake up in the middle of the night hearing sounds?

I had cases of sleep paralysis in the past, where I'd find myself immobilized upon waking up in the middle of the night, with hallucinations accompanying the background. And used to happen frequently. While sleep paralysis is often associated with vivid visual hallucinations, In my case it's mostly auditory. It's very terrifying, and difficult to explain as to it's not really anything you could hear in the normal course of things in real life. It kinda sound like clanging metals getting fragmented, shattered, pounded, and all the crazy stuffs that could be associated with getting dilapidated in all possible ways.

It starts of with a minimal volume, and the sound and speed gets rapidly maximized drastically, repeated, and it's unbearable, the sound literally scrambles your head. It normally lasts for a few minutes, 5 minutes minimum, to undefined lengths of time as it feels like forever.

In my last encounter, I found myself running outside the room as I was seriously scared shitless, crying in panic 'cause I couldn't bear it. Normally I'd find myself immobilized with the same context of sounds plaguing me, but on that occasion, there was something really heavy lying on my back, and my back felt getting gradually warmer. There was a satanic scream associating the background, that can't possibly be surfaced in words. But it has been a while now since then.

Is there anyone quite possibly on the same page? Or am seriously I nuts?

The sleep paralysis sounds you are hearing are not to be afraid of. Sleep paralysis happens to everyone, however most people don't wake up in the middle of the night and find themselves stuck in it. The purpose for it is to make sure you don't move your real body when you are dreaming, so its a pretty useful thing. The scary hallucinations are due to you being close to the dream state, and being very afraid of not being able to move, therefore your mind will create a lot of scary hallucinations. This brings me to my next point, lucid dreaming. If, next time you experience this Sleep paralysis, and instead of being extremely afraid, if you choose to stay relaxed during all the wierd sounds you may hear, and close your eyes without focusing on anything but keeping aware, you will probably find the sounds and vibrations getting louder and louder until you are in a dream, lucid. If you are up to it, try this, and remember to stay calm even if you feel afraid, cuz nothing can really harm you, if the vibrations stop, try getting up and performing a reality check, you may be lucid in a dream.

You are aware that hallucinations during sleep paralysis can be auditory, right? Mine are completely auditory as well, but it's usually just small creaks here and there. I just usually tell myself that it's all in my head, and it isn't real.
If I'm dreaming, how come I can do...THIS! *grows fourth arm*

Thanks, lawilahd. While I may have gotten used to the auditory hallucinations, trying to get myself calm at the heat of things could still be really quite difficult. And lol, I've been working with getting rid of it for a while now, shame.

Well your just in luck, I've got a good example for you. Just 5 minutes ago I woke up from a lucid dream. If you want to read it, its in my DJ on this website. Anyway, the dream ended and I found myself in my room awake but almost unable to move. I tried writing my dream down, but isntead chose to rest and then I felt the sleep paralysis sensations much more than I usually do. Instead of lasting for 30-40 seconds, this time I could constantly hear a loud screeching clanging of metals and very destructive sounds for what felt like 3 minutes. At the heat of it, I felt my body float up and turn over onto my stomach, this all happened when I woke up from an already lucid dream and decided to re enter (this is called a Dream exit induced lucid dream). Then finally i tried getting up and yelling "become lucid" and seconds later I was standing up in my room, dreaming lucidly.

If you want to lucid dream, and are up to the challenge, you should not try to get rid of sleep paralysis but rather embrace it. Next time it happens, fall asleep even if you are hearing insanely loud things, (if you are paralyzed and you know whats going on, there really is not much else you can do) If you choose to be afraid, you will find yourself getting more and more afraid of this condition and will never be able to enter lucid dreams this way. You may even be a natural lucid dreamer if you learn to use this.

That is really interesting. I wish I could've known about this earlier, 'cause honestly this have been going on for years! Shame, all those encounters I was thinking I'm under some kinda demonic incantation, and been reduced to fear.

I am very much up to the challenge; I've been practicing lucid dreaming for quite a while now, using RC's (DILD), and I'm getting good at it. It's really amazing, and I will absolutely try that approach next time

What really keeps me boggled, though, just why does it produce these metal screeching sounds. It's the same thing in every SP encounter.

I think it is because you are afraid of it. If you're not scared at all, you'll see/hear/feel less scary things.
(Tho I really have no experience..so don't take it as the one and only right answer)
