      New Here:)

Hello all, I am new and have lately been doing some research on lucid dreaming. I am not sure if I have ever had a lucid dream, but I have good dream recall and my dreams are usually vivid (I write down ones that I particularly enjoyed, hehe). My dreams usually come early morning, I set my alarm clock about an hour before I actually have to get up so I can wake up more 'naturally' and in that time, balancing between sleep and consciousness is when I most often dream. I have had times when I am aware that I am dreaming but am not able to control anything happening in the dream. Is that a version of lucid dreaming? Am I on the right track? Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Writing down your dreams is something that is very key to lucid dreaming since it helps you to improve recall as well as find dream signs, recurring themes that can help you to become lucid. You write them down in what's called a dream journal, or DJ. The situation you described is indeed a lucid dream. Lucid simply means that you are aware of the fact that you are dreaming while in the dream. Control is a different aspect which doesn't need to be present in a lucid dream and vice-versa.

Some tips are to, of course, start a DJ. It sounds like you already do for vivid dreams but be sure to write down any and all dreams you can remember. I also suggest you read through some of the various induction techniques and pick one that works for you since everyone seems to have their favorite. The two main categories are WILD (wake induced lucid dream - going directly from a waking state into a dream without any lapse in consciousness) and DILD (dream induced lucid dreaming - realizing you are dreaming while in the dream). Most people find DILD and its various adaptations to be easiest when first starting out.

You should also learn about various reality checks (RC) which you preform to check whether or not you are dreaming. Some of these include plugging your nose and trying to breathe through it (in a dream you can breathe just find), looking at your hands (in a dream there are often extra/missing fingers and various malformations), looking at text (it often appears jumbled or in strange symbols), and looking at a clock, turning away, then looking back (it will often change drastically. Not just 1-2 minutes but hours or even display impossible times like 28:83). Once you do all this you should be right on track to having your first lucid dream in no time

Also, check out the DVA (dreamviews academy) in which there are various classes taught by members here on the forum which have a lot of experience with dreaming. The classes range from a WILD class to a general intro course which I recommend you join. We have chat normally on Mon Tue Thur Fri at noon and 8PM CST though they are subject to change. The definite times can be found here.

      Welcome to the forum!

Burke already gave you some great information. It would be hard to add more, other than to look around the forum and post anywhere it interests you to do so.

Setting your alarm a little early like that sounds like a great way to get a dream or two in before you have to wake up. With a little work on reality checks and awareness you might gain the control you're looking for.

I suggest you visit the Attaining Lucidity and Induction Techniques sections of the forum. Both should give you some good direction.

If you have any more questions please post them or send a staffmember(like me) a private message by clicking on our profile name.

      Happy dreams!

Thank you for the information, I will definitely be looking around for more information. Glad I have already had lucid dreaming experience, I have had only one dream where I checked within the dream to see if it was real. I always try to notice if I am breathing. In real life I can focus on the air going in and out of my lungs but I never think about soemthing like that in a dream. Anyway, in this dream, I actually checked that and when I woke up I was convinced the dream had actually taken place, lol. But I will work on improving my technique. Any dream is good for me, where I am aware its a dream at the time or not.
