Being stressed definitely doesn't help with trying to fall asleep, whether you are trying to do so while remaining aware or not. Unfortunately, it's not like you can just decide to stop being stressed. You could try using relaxation techniques, though, or just take a break and try again when you are less stressed. As to swallowing too often, it might actually help if you don't try so hard to stay still. You're going to end up swallowing while you are trying to fall asleep, so just let it happen and try not to pay attention to it (easier said than done, of course).
