      Mother being difficult.

She got all angry and asked me what was the point of lucid dreaming, and gaining insight to your subconscious. I explained her how it helps you discover your inner self, and much more, but she said that I had control problems, and that maybe wanting to LD was just that.
How would you explain it to her?

You don't. Just accept that she probably won't accept it, and continue on as planned. OR, if you find this idea unappealing, back it up with science and explain to her exactly why you'd like to lucid dream. Of course, some parents simply will never understand, and you need not always seek approval.

Just tell her that instead of wasting 7 or 8 hours sleeping, that instead your increasing your mental capasity and creative thoughts. It worked on my mom.

Instead of trying to explain all the science behind how it can help improve your memory and cognitive abilities, etc etc, just tell her you're doing it because it's fun, like a hobby.
Tell her that the thrill of flying, riding dragons, exploring space, meeting idols, and all that good stuff, is just pure fun (which is true anyways).

Well since I don't know your reasons for wanting to have LDs, I cannot intelligently answer your question.

      sounds like my mother
Since Lucid Dreaming isn't so popular(I just came to know about it last month), people (like my mom) tend to associate this stuff with paranoia or stuff like that.

Don't try to explain, I don't think she really wants to hear your reasons.
Though you can try saying that it will help your concentration and memory (hey, you improve your dream recall, isn't that better memory? and there are various techniques as well where you have to concentrate, so no lying here! ).
Say that Einstein used to do this too! (I've "just heard" about it though, I can't say its true)
If she still doesn't listen, say that you have stopped doing it, I know its lying and its not good, but isn't it still better than to have an argument with your mom everyday?
Remember, you have the right to do anything you want, don't let your mom hold you back, its your life, live it your way.

This. When did people become so paranoid and close-minded, completely intolerant to the lifestyles of others? It irritates me, no offense. It's like all the people that claim lucid dreaming is dangerous or can kill you. Plain ignorance. Grrr...

Argh! My whole family does this. "What is the point of knowing you are dreaming?" Some people just can't accept it for what it is, they think its "Weird", and "Unnatural".

You don't have to give her all of the details, just tell her the simple definition. It is a dream where you know you are dreaming. Then tell her 1 or 2 reasons why you are into it. I don't understand why she would get angry, but if she does just don't bring this up with her again. You don't need her permission to have some dreams.

I haven't told anyone from my RL yet, the one person who would probably really like the idea is kind of busy and I doubt he'd be all that focused on it. That's like telling someone they can have all the adventure, women, food, and anything else they want in the world if they can wash a limitless pile of dishes

Some people are just non-believers(or infidels) and will not listen to what you have to say.

You could back it up with every reason possible but they will only hear what they want to hear, and that just so happens to be "Lucid dreaming is not real/weird/a mental problem/etc.".

I think you should at least try once with either scientific backup, book backup, etc.

After that, if she doesnt believe you, theres just no reason to continue trying to convince her.

And yes, i agree with Moose. Fun is basically my reason for Lding and alot of people reasons. Cause it IS fun :3

I don't see a point in convincing her- I've tried telling mine and she was like "lets never speak of this again"- just do your dreaming and don't let anyone bother you.

I agree. Why even tell her about it at all? How is she going to know what you do in your sleep?

I would show any doubters the part of EWOLD that answers the doubts about LDing that people commonly have.

Remind the doubters that this book isn't written by some new-age quack with his head in the clouds, but a doctor with a degree in maths.

my mom thought lucid dreaming was a power from satan. Im not even joking here. She started praying for me haha So i just stopped bringing it up. eventually she forgot all about it, or assumed I stopped. You can't convince everyone that its cool sadly. Some people are just going to stay close minded.

I think most of us here have the same 'problem'. My mother actually said: "First give me grandchildren and then go and destroy yourself".
That same afternoon she said she was joking, but I'm still in shock.
Come on! What if Martin Luther King said: "I kinda have a dream... nah, I don't wanna talk about it."

My famliy are slightly interested, they're pretty open minded with everything and say they'll always support me no matter what I do, etc, which is good. I find it hard to tell my friends though, its kind of hard to bring up, if you get me. My closest friends think its kind of cool but aren't anywhere near as enthusiastic.

I did. XD I have no problem admitting it. I'm a perfectionist, proud, a little arrogant and controlling girl. (Makes me sound bad, huh? XD) But I also have great things about me, I have a lot of compassion, I'm determined, strong, sweet and many other things And I know LD will help me determine the roots of my deepest and buried problems
