Actually, it's almost impossible to tell if you are ACTUALLY in sleep paralysis, or dreaming that you are in sleep paralysis. The reason for this is that during SP, most of the times we have hypnagogic hallucinations, which include imagery and sounds. This means that even though we might be awake, we see and hear stuff that are not really there, such as the common old hag, or a dwarf sitting in your chest, one time I even saw a magic act. However, no matter if you are dreaming that you are in SP, or if you are actually in SP, you can take advantage of it. Try to make a transition to a dream by imagining a scenario, actually building a scenario, put people there, sounds, images, even smells and try to "step" into your own little dream. Other thing you could do, which will only work if you're dreaming is saying to yourself (and believing it) "Sleep paralysis will end NOW", this worked for me a couple of time and went on with my lucid dream . Anyways, welcome to DV, and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask
