Before you try any techniques I would suggest focusing solely on dream recall. Getting one or more dreams per night might take some time for some but is an essential step. Increasing recall is one chief purpose of recording in a dream journal, so don't neglect to do that.

My first wasn't really a technique but a Dream Induced Lucid Dream (DILD) from time spent recording dreams and practicing reality checks. In this case lucidity pops up during a dream for a variety of reasons. Also my favorite actual technique to try at the start was a Mnemonically Induced Lucid Dream (MILD) which was simple and yielded fairly good results.

I would advise you from getting too engrossed with the Wake Initiated Lucid Dream (WILD) too early on as this is a pitfall for many new dreamers who focus only on this technique and get discouraged from the failure rate. There are many older members who still have problems doing this, though some seem to be able to do it naturally or achieve it with much practice.

Just hop through the tutorials section. Do some trial-and-error. Best of luck.

Edit: Links seem to be screwed up. Just go to the tutorial section to see where I got them.
