      Canada

I'm thinking about moving to another country. Canada has always seemed like a good place to live to me. Can anyone who lives there give me any advice?
Is it easy to find a job? Is rent high? etc.
Also is it still fairly cold in summer? Or is it just winter that it's like that?

      Thanks guys!

Well, I have dual citizenship (US and Canada) so I decided to move up here for the summer. The second job I applied to I got. I'm in BC, it's been rainy and cold for about three weeks. The summers get warm, but not too hot. My rent is fairly low because I'm living in the staff house, so I can't really speak for the rest of the country. One thing I really hate about Canada, is the mosquitoes. I have so many bites that itch like crazy at the moment.

What province are you thinking about moving to?

So far I'm liking it up here. Hopefully someone with more experience can add their opinion.

Oh.... I was thinking Ontario lol Just coz my mum has a friend who lives there and it looks great. Spose I could look elsewhere though.

Zebrah- Don't think I really have to worry about mosquitoes, I live in Australia atm lol

Do you have to have citizenship to get jobs? I'm thinking probably mostly unskilled work, I don't have any qualifications except for Design/Illustration, so I want to probably do labour work or something, maybe on farms if possible.

Canada always seemed to me like the chilled out and friendly little brother of his neurotic, violent sibling.

Kind of difficult, unless I renounced my citizenship lol
Don't worry mate, once I have you riding in my kangaroo eating barbied shrimp you'll love us. (Literally no one cooks shrimp on the barby, I don't know where that comes from.... I have been known to ride kangaroos on occasion).

BC's a great place to live if you ever move to Canada. People are generally friendly and the marijuana is potent, not very expensive either. I haven't really spent much time outside the Lower Mainland of BC so I can't really recommend any other part of the country. All I know is that rent is pretty high in Vancouver but it's pretty good in neighboring cities like Surrey. Surrey's also ranked third (might not be exactly third but I remember it being high on the list) in the country on the list of best job climates in the country so that's a plus. I live in Surrey so that's a big plus as well.

As for the weather, it all depends on where you are. The west coast is pretty mild, it's not too hot nor too cold although it might be hard for you to get used to the winters. it rains a fair bit but again, it depends on which part of BC you're in. The middle of the country's a different story though, the summers are hot and winters are cold as fuck. I don't know much aboot the east coast except that they talk a little funny over there, eh?

      Scotland PFFT

Summers are quite hot, they can reach 20-40 degrees (convert yourself). Winter is awesome. the most populated areas are Southern Ontario and Quebec (but Tu non parles de Francais or something like that) If you want nature, go west of Manitoba. Freezing Native Arctic stuffz are way north. I suggest Southern Ontario cus theres like, more things there :/ And lots of houses are being built there.

Scotland and Canada should unite. Scotland is known as England's hat and Canada is known as America's. We have things in common!

Canada has a great range of climate and geography, as you'd expect from the world's second largest country. The east is fairly hilly and full of forests and lakes, the middle is very flat and open, the west is mountainous and the north is an arctic wasteland. In summer, it can get very hot in eastern Canada (30˚+) and is usually very humid. Winters there are relatively mild with lots of snowfall. Central canada is a lot drier and has much harsher winters (-30˚ and below). Western Canada has much milder winters (rarely below 0˚) but lots of rain.

The economy is pretty good right now. Most immigrants go to Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal or Ottawa. I'd avoid Quebec unless you want to learn French (Montreal is an amazing city though). You can find rural farmland across the country, sometimes quite close to major urban areas (no farming in winter obviously). Things can get quite dull in central Canada though.

Most jobs only require that you have the ability to work in Canada (work visa). Canada is huge, I'd recommend getting a car here or you might be stuck experiencing a very limited area. If I were vacationing here, I'd go to BC/Alberta for the mountains (they're actually quite different, BC is wetter and has huge forests whereas Alberta is rockier and even has some deserts) or Ottawa (in between Toronto and Montreal, easy travel to about where 25% of the population lives).

Except in America the further North you go the better things get. That's like the UK turned upside down. In England we have this awesome game where you're given a loaded gun and the winner is the one who walks furthest North without shooting themselves. The current record holder almost made it beyond Hadrian's wall... although he was blind, deaf, and had an olfactory disorder. Poor bastard could still detect the aura of despair though.

My step mother is Canadian. It's actually not that cold in the summer. Toronto anyway, it's literally across the river from northern New York. They do have much better schools, much better health care, but of course, higher taxes.

Hmmmm. Marijuana ey?.... BC it is. Hehe, that was a major point for Canada.

So going by you and Spartiate's info, central Canada is probably the least awesome place due to it's dullness?

That's good, so maybe I could work on a farm for the rest of the time, and in winter just get maybe a part time job and go explore on days off.
I really want to see different places in nature, not interested as much in the cities (not that I hate them or anything), so maybe that could work since farmland is so close.

Kind of. Just don't bother with the province of Saskatchewan, it's just flat... and that's about all their is to it. I'm exaggerating a bit but it isn't exactly known for being a hub of excitement.

True, people without drinking disorders but with houses and food do tend to be a bit less exciting.

haha ok. I don't mind flat sometimes though, makes me feel really grounded.

Most of the big cities have pretty good public transportation (buses and/or trains/metros). They can be pretty convenient since you don't have to worry about parking downtown which can be a pain. The problem is getting between cities. I live in Ottawa and the closest major city is Montreal, two hours away by car. That's close-by by Canadian standards (although Australia is known for being sparsely populated as well...) Having your own car is immensely faster and more convenient than long-distance bussing and much cheaper than planes/trains. There are also many rural areas and parks that are nearly unreachable without your own vehicle. Sometimes public transport doesn't reach the outskirts of cities either (close to the farmlands).
