Thread: What did you learn today?

As the topic says : share your learning experience. It can be anything about life, I am definitively not limiting this to school. I did not find similar thread so I decided to make a new one.


I learned today that children are extremely logical. Usually far more than adults.

Today I learned that polarization of plane electromagnetic waves in most cases can be described by the difference in amplitude and phase of two harmonically oscillating vectors that are orthogonal to each other and the direction the wave is travelling.

Depends on their age. Some children show signs of being psychopaths. For example, they will say "I like vanilla icecream better than chocolate icecream, I like strawberry icecream better than vanilla icecream, I like chocolate icecream better than strawberry icecream."

I was talking about ie. logical learning of words and grammar. This is a little hard to explain in English, but I'll try.

Verb for go boom is "pamahtaa" in Finnish. The imitation of sound is made by taking the first part of it. So Boom Boom is "Pam Pam"
My brother who is three knew this and he was playing that he was fishing. Verb for fishing is "onkia" so naturally he simulated the action of fishing by saying "onk onk" while he played. It is very logical way to shape the language within the rules you have already learned, even if it is incorrect. It is just ignorance of the exceptions, but it is logical.

This probably was not very clear. There are many other things that children show their way of deducting connections between things.

I completely agree with you, as usual, unelias. Children are often more logical than adults, but in my view it is mostly because adults allow themselves to be trapped in the world like a bird willingly flying into their cage. perhaps children are more logical because they have not yet grasped the distractions of adulthood?

Anyway, what i learned today is no matter how hard one tries, they will never be as good of a person as they'd like to be, because they've had to try so hard in the first place. Find me someone who has tried hard to become exactly what they'd like to be, and succeeded. i tell you they are impossible to find. oh, and i'm not just talking about careers here, obviously.

I think the Wug test is an excellent example showing what you're talking about.

I learned today that the old saying "best way to man's heart goes through his stomach" is pretty much true on me.

Today I learned basic "decorate" coding in Slade for skulltag. I'm making playable classes for doom.

Today i learned that i don't need as much sleep as i had previously believed.

good to know.

I learned yesterday that there are cases in which pathetically begging and inducing pity instead of keeping silent actually can get you places - like onto a train 3 minutes before it leaves after being told that they stopped boarding and there is no way to get on anymore.

Today I learned that (in my college at least) there are almost no females in higher level Computer Science courses.

Today I learned how surprisingly many people actually look up to me. I have always discarded those thoughts are my own thinking. I'd hate to disappoint them with my actions.

An excellent point Squishdiboo, thank you for sharing that. I was not aware that kind of test, since I do not know if it translates to other languages as well very interesting.

Good thread, but it's a bit too general for the ask/tell me about section. Moving it to the lounge.

I learned that everything is easier if you accept yourself. Not that it "makes things good" it just makes bad things easier to deal with.

I learned that I actually need to do something to feel good. Instead of just entertaining myself with movies and games and all that.
