I dont see why aethists cant, for most people its a time of family bonding and having fun with the family clan, it dosnt have to be about religion.

and then of course, there are all the christians that are doing the opposite of what most people in this thread are talking about.

santas not in the bible, this gives aethists a reason to join in with the christmas season, of course, then the religious fanatics say that christmas is too commercial, true meaning of christmas, all that jazz.

thats just how i see it, great thread though.

How many times do I have to tell people.. Jesus is alive and well.

Theirs like 5 in every county...
This was that cult, and the prisoners said it had always existed and always would exist, hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway.

"Starting in 1931, magazine ads for Coca-Cola featured St. Nick as a kind, jolly man in a red suit. Because magazines were so widely viewed, and because this image of Santa appeared for more than three decades, the image of Santa most people have today is largely based on our advertising."

"The Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862; Santa was shown as a small elf-like figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years and along the way changed the color of his coat from tan to the now traditional red. Though some people believe the Coca-Cola Santa wears red because that is the Coke® color, the red suit comes from Nast's interpretation of St. Nick."

Well, he did... he was embellished with magical powers later but Jesus was a historical religious leader.

No, he really wasn't. There isn't a single shred of historical evidence that he ever existed. Gospels don't count.

I think you're forgetting that Christianity as we know it was created in the 4th century.

Apparently most historians believe there was a Jewish teacher called Jesus in the first half of the first century who was crucified...

I never really cared for history anyway.

There were probably several guys named Jesus, some of whom were teachers, some of whom were crucified. There were plenty of Jews and plenty of Romans crucifying Jews. So that's not good enough. For there to be THE Jesus, there would have to be solid evidence of the same man who was named Jesus and was Jewish and was crucified and had a messianic Jewish ministry and had disciples and was betrayed by a friend named Judas, etc. I'm not talking about A Jesus. I'm talking about THE Jesus.

drewmandan is right, there isn't much evidence that there did exist a Jesus. Do you think that four of the disciples could independently write more or less the same nonsense in their Gospels? About Jesus performing miraculous feats that normally don't happen? These obviously are either lies about a real character (and Jesus praised honesty, no?) or a simple fairy-tale (Jesus never existed).

The disciples came together and decided on a story, then went off and spread it around. Was the story based on a real Jesus? I doubt it. Even the Gospels don't say much about Jesus' background or history. And if you throw out the Gospels, you throw out all evidence of this character.

You can liken Jesus to an ancient "Harry Potter" if you will, what with performing magicks and whatnot.

I believe that you should probably consider checking out the general posting guidlines.

I think to say that these men just decided to make up a person for no apparent reason and start spreading there beliefs around is ludicrous. You seem to be forgetting that MANY of these believers including the disciples (peter being the most prominent of those who died) died for this new faith. If this was just some story they randomly made up why would peter, one of the original 12, die for it? It is likely that Jesus did exsist, was betrayed, and was crucified. Weather or not he had powers and was God's Son is a matter of faith. Some people have compared what the christian religion started out as to the cult's that end up getting in fire fights with the police and getting killed. Personally I don't believe that was how christianity started out, I believe the bible.

I have a Jewish stepfather, and all of my biological family are Christians, cousins, aunts, brother, father, mother, grandparents, uncles, all of them. So, I ask them not to buy me things and depending on if I feel like it I will show up on Christmas because it is a family thing, sort of.

Before Christmas I have to deal with that hanukkah crap, then on Christmas we have Christmas, and then it is finally freaking over.

My birthday is in January though so I mean I don't feel left out when everyone gets those little cheapo gifts but me. I try to go hang out with them if they invite me...but all in all it is "just another day" for me. Another annoying fucking day, but another day none the less.

HAHA. At first I thought you were talking about santa claus as this is a christmas thread.

If they made him(Jesus) up for those reasons, then why did the relgion of Christianity change so much around the year 400? Why was the religion that existed before this point known as christianity was a rebellious group that wanted most of all an end to violence and the class system. The modern religion of christianity has nothing to do with ending the class system, if anything it wants to divide us more.

Christ basically had one point. Love everyone. That really doesn't sound like MONEY WEALTH POWER AND CONTROL. Just because most christians don't really follow Jesus doesn't mean that he didn't exist.
157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

Evaluating 2+2 is a bit different to determining the origin of the image of Santa Claus, because the value of 2+2 is dependent entirely on how '+' and '2' are defined. That is, if you know exactly what is meant by '2+2', then you can deduce its value.

Atheists celebrate christmas for the lulz.

      Seriously.

I don't care if Jesus was born or died or if a rock rolled away from the cave. It's christmas. It's cold, snowy, and there's little sunlight, so we don't give a shit.
