I would not advise speeding up or slowing down your breathing to prolong SP. Any change in speed will most likely give signal that you are awake.

Changing your breathing pattern (and also trying to wiggle your fingers or toes) is acctually avised, if you want to break the SP, because that's how your mind finds out, that you are awake and it's time to release you from SP.

When you say "I tought I had opened my eyes DURING the SP and saw my room, but now that I notice, it was a different room entirely."

That sounds to me like you were in LD already here. That's when you could have gotten up from bed and continue with your LD.

Fast breathing is normal during SP. But once you are aware of what is happening, your breathing might slow down, since you are not worried anymore.

Speeding up the breathing is just a signal that it should keep on going.

Yet again, that's how it is for me... and since it's like that for me, i'm sure there are others that this works the same way for... So advising not to do it just because you think it's not right is not a good idea. It might just work for him too.

I say it's worth the try.

So I actually have had 2 LDs about 3 seconds long each? How do I avoid waking up?

Sleep paralysis occurs when your brain thinks that you're asleep. Knowing this, here are some tried-and-true methods of breaking out of the paralysis.

Change your breathing pattern - speed up or slow down your breathing to something different than what you were doing when the SP started happening. You can also try taking a deep breath, then a short breath - an irregular pattern of breathing.
