      DEILD - Staying Sill?

      Hey DV!

I have been practicing the DEILD and I have pretty much everything nailed down....except for the major part that includes staying still! I wake up after everyone one of my dreams with my eyes closed but before I realize it I'm sitting straight up in bed!

Are there any tips that any of you can give me to help me stay still???

      Your help is appreciated!

Have you tried a mantra? Something like "When I wake up, I don't move".

Well, to tell you the truth, I was only able to DEILD, when I didn't wake up completely. When I woke up just a tiny bit, still woozy, not even thinking about opening eyes, more asleep than awake. I don't get into this state often. I can't really control, when I wake up like this, or fully, with thought of upcoming day already racing through my mind.

For me, it's more like a waiting game - when will this happen again and I will have enough awareness to remember to DEILD, than something I can make happen conscioussly. Does this make sense?

Yes that makes sense! My problem though not that I think to much to awake me, but instead
it is about moving. My body automatically sits up hahaha!

I learned to recognize that I was waking up using a mantra. What would happen is that I would notice myself entering the void at the end of the dream and I could remind myself to stay still before I even left the dream. I takes a while to learn but it pays of big time.

That's interesting! I can recognize waking up as well. I just need to remember to remind myself to stay still. By any chance do you remember the mantra you used?

Hi, I'm not sure if this will help, but usually when I DEILD, I don't even stay still at all! When I start to wake up, I usually roll over or change position. I think that it is more on the mental aspect than the physical, so as long as I don't focus on my movement and just focus on the dream instead, I find that it doesn't give me problems. Most of the time I also uncontrollably open my eyes, but what I do is I try to let it go and close them back like nothing happened, then drift back into the dream. Also, when it happens to you, try not to think "oh no I moved, I ruined my chance!". Instead, keep calm and focus on the dream

Maybe it's a dream and if I scream, it will burst at the seams.

That helps enormously! It is good to know that it is mostly mental. I heard that it was possible to DEILD after moving but it takes longer. Can you relate to that or do you enter the almost instantly?

I haven't really paid attention to the time it takes me to DEILD. But most of the time when I roll over, I start to get imagery right away, and I go from there. :3

I think my mantra was "I will wake up when the dream is ending".
Personally I prefer not moving but it really comes down to state of mind you are in, it's all about not focusing on your body and just letting it fall asleep. The less you care about your body the better.

Thank you all for your help! I really feel like I can succeed with DEILD now. I felt like I was getting too caught up in the technical details when I should really focus on how to persevere my state of mind when I awaken.

I use a method of talking to myself. Act as if you must tell your brain things as if it were a child. You do not need to say the things out loud, but clearly think them AT your brain, as if talking to another person.

So when you find you have sat up, then actually use your internal voice to correct your brain. "Hey! You were not supposed to move! Tomorrow when you wake, do not move. You understand? Do not move!" It sounds strange but it can help train behaviors in yourself very well.
Peace Be With You. Oh, and sure, The Force too, why not.

That sounds like a great way to train your brain! Sometimes I talk to myself like that when I make a mistake but I never thought to direct it towards my brain! I will be sure to try this when I mess up!

      Thanks!

Hey Marine! Lol remember me? Well since you helped me I will help you, If I can that is..! Anyways, I must say the past few nights, Ive been waking up with my eyes closed, however I cant tell If I moved or not because even though I stay still with my eyes shut nothing ever seems to happen, I keep thinking I probably moved and I didn't know so I give up. I have heard that you can set a couple alarms. Like set one to go off at one time.. go back to sleep while repeating a mantra over and over (like "I will not move or open my eyes when the next alarm goes off") and try that.. but to be honest, I do see DEILDing to be difficult to me, even though my 2nd lucid dream happened because of my first DEILD attempt haha. Good luck with DEILDing!

Also, what technique do you use the most often to lucid dream?

Thanks! I heard about the alarm thing but I didn't really want to use it because I would prefer to be able to do it naturally because the alarm limits you to one chance to become lucid. Now that you say it though I could use the alarm to train myself to stay still!

Most of my LDs have come from DILD. I never really used a technique before besides Yoshi's ADA technique. If you have not read it yet I highly recommend it! The tutorial basically shows you how to maintain your awareness throughout the day, so when you are in a dream your chances of becoming lucid increase enormously. That's why I want to try DEILD. I am already a natural at waking up after REM periods; I just have to figure out how to stay still! I did manage to get a perfect attempt a few nights ago but I didn't transition into a dream because of a few reasons.

      Thanks for your help!

It probably won't do you any harm to move. If you wake up and find yourself sitting/standing/whatever, just lay back down and think nothing of it. I can't stress that enough, because if you think "crap I'm sitting up again!", it'll set your mind into "awake" mode, thus making it harder to fall back asleep and WILD/MILD! So just gently lay back down and fall "asleep".

Progress: DILD: 100+, WILD: 1/2, WBTB WILD: 2

Goals: Achieve WILD, Be able to induce a WILD on command.

Gotta agree with Paigeyemps here. For my 2 DEILDs I moved too! In my case I woke up from a lucid, wrote it down and just lied down again. Next thing I know (because I wasn't really "active") I'm in a dream again. Trick for me was not to think about anything, just visualizing my previous dream scene as I go to bed, or a new dream scene I would like to be in.

Ok this is really reassuring! Lately when I tried to DEILD I would move and I would do the exact opposite of what you said...I would think, "CRAP! I moved again!", and I would just go to bed normally. I wish I never would of heard that moving causes a failed DEILD because it simply isn't true. I just have to train my mind to believe that!

Well guys, it's not like if you move everything is ruined. It's not.

But if you move and wake up, you are not in REM anymore. For the attempt to be a DEILD, you wake up from a dream, don't move and don't wake up too much (more asleep than awake) so you stay in REM. (You stay in REM for a few seconds after you semi-wake up but don't give your mind any indication that you are awake by opening your eyes or moving). Then you enter another dream within seconds.

But if you move, it will not be DEILD anymore (Dream Exit LD). It will be a WILD (Wake Initiated LD).

So if you wanna DEILD, don't move.
But if you move, go for a WILD. There is a good chance for both methods.

      Hope this helps.

Thanks, that helps explain things a little! I guess when you boil it down to the basics the best thing to do is to stay still and not open your eyes. I guess that is what my goal is going to be to achieve DEILD!

If you decide to and learn to stay still everytime you wake up from aoth the sleep and the dream state, then when you wont have to think am i doing a deild this morning, oh yes stay still. And by then you have moved. Instead you will already be still because you always are. This will help lots when you are planing to deild, as well as giving you lots of other goes were you are not planing to try one but you find your self still in sp and decide to do it.

That's a great viewpoint! I should train myself to just wake up still naturally, so I don't view it as DEILD.
