      Semi Lucid?

      Hey everyone,

I have been seeing a lot of people who have had so called semi-lucid dreams. What are these, and how do they differ from regular lucid dreams.

Also, this morning i practiced a MILD/WBTB hybrid where i woke up at 7 and repeatedly told myself that i would be dreaming(mantra). The first dream lasted 2 minutes, but I was aware i was dreaming. The second dream lasted around an hour, and it started lucid, but i forgot i was dreaming a few minutes after. Was this semi-lucid?

Well, semi-lucid dreaming is a term that means NO control whatsoever. You know your dreaming but you dont fully comprehend the idea so you gain no control at all. You will most likely forget your dreaming very quickly.

      Did you have control?

I had control, but at the same time i was still partially awake and none of the senses from the dream were actually experienced. When i actually lost consciousness, i was no longer lucid. It was just really vivid.

Technically, you are either Lucid or you are not. Semi-Lucid is just often used to describe those dreams where you realize you are dreaming, but don't really grasp the concept. Basically, one is still bound by the rules of waking life even though they know it is a dream. Sometimes, semi-lucid is also used to describe a very unstable, fuzzy or short lucid dream. Really though, if you realize you are dreaming within the dream, it is a lucid dream.

Yeah perform several different types of reality checks and remind yourself that you are dreaming like gameover suggested. You could also try to move some object with your mind, or something small like that to really plant the idea of, "I am dreaming" into your head. Possibly try to fly/hover/jump really high etc. Just something simple that will get you started .

To me, a semi lucid is like you are barely lucid. Like you realized that you were dreaming and then you sort of dreamed about lucid dreaming. It happened to me a TON.

Idk if i got it wrong, but thats my thoughts.

Yeah, the term "semi-lucid" is subjective to the dreamer. Whatever dreams you want to classify as semi-lucid, go ahead and do it .

I only consider a lucid to be
      little or more control
      more than 1 minute
      and all that other recommendations

      What about this scenario:
This morning, I was in a dream that was lucid. However, I could still hear the hum of my computer in my room, and I still felt that I was in my bed. It was kind of like a daydream, since I could still see everything going on in the dream.
      Was this even considered lucid?

Also, how can I go about taking that dream and making it an actual dream (where I am not conscious of the real world)?

When I have a semi-lucid I realize that I am dreaming but still follow the plot of the dream, even when I would rather do something else. I don't really understand that I can just stop and do what I want.

Well, if you knew you were dreaming during this time, it was a lucid. It seems you just had some stability issues and still had that connection to your actualy body. You could try performing some stabilization techniques. If that doesn't help, you simply need to engage in some sort of dream activity so you will forget about your actual body and break the connection.

I have an issue with semi-lucid dreams right now. I like your explanation of a semi-lucid dream; your explanation applies to me as well. My question to you is, "Would it help you if, when journaling your dreams, you could check a check-box to identify your dream as Semi-lucid? Currently, their is only the option for "Lucid" on "Non-lucid."

      Thanks

Mantras like 'I am dreaming' 'I will be dreaming' etc. are only good for some people.. Most times when ive used these mantras ive done exactly that and knew i was dreaming, nothing more, I never stopped and said Hey im dreaming!! Maybe try different mantras like 'When im dreaming i will do a reality check', so even if you know you are dreaming you will do what you said in your mantra to test reality, which should result in the infamous eureeka moment

I actually thought of something similar. A friend of mine here on DV has a blurb somewhere that says, "I am dreaming" just as you state at the beginning of your comment. I actually like that over what others have said, "Am I dreaming?" You are trying to achieve the same goal as I am though--find a mantra that triggers the true awareness.

I've mentioned this before: I once looked at my hand and it had 11 fingers. I was not lucid. I said, "Yep, that's strange!" and proceeded with my non-lucid dream.

Now, for those of you/us who have a conception of a semi-lucid dream, I ask you this. Do you think there would have been any difference if I had been "semi-lucid" and happened to dream that I did a reality check?

I know, this is purely speculation, but I want take the state of semi-lucidity and move 1 step beyond that. To perform a stabilization technique would be an act of someone who is lucid, but you don't have to be lucid to "luck" into a lucid dream-themed action in a non-lucid or semi-lucid dream. If you do an RC in a "semi-lucid" dream, I think that might kick you into lucidity.

      1. Does anyone agree?
      2. Does that not illustrate a state of dreaming that is neither lucid nor non-lucid?

      Hi KingYoshi,

I had recommended to a DG on chat that we could use a check box on the DJ's so I can identify my "semi-lucids" as such. I could simply look for the dreams that I checked as semi-lucid. The problem is, I am appealing to people who don't believe in semi-lucid dreams.

So, no big deal. I can add a tag "semi-lucid." My point though, is that there are plenty of people who have identified a type of dream that seems to approach lucidity, but doesn't quite make it, so perhaps a check box for "Semi-lucid" would help those people find dreams in their journal that had that particular quality.

It is just an idea. Thoughts anyone?

When I am lucid, special powers have proven difficult. I tried to throw fire-balls and failed. Consider my next super power trick--to walk through a door. With this type of trick, there are only two options: you walk through the door or the door stops you. Obviously in a dream anything could happen, but for now lets just look at the immediate likely options. I was successful in going through the door. In fact, before I went through a door, I burrowed into the earth.

I had heard about people flying through walls, so I decided to see if I could go through the ground. I didn't see anything, probably because there wouldn't be much to see. Regardless, I was able to pass through. The door was the same, but I passed through to the inside of a house.

I think this type of action will yield more successful results than some of the other powers you may try.
