First, I think you should't do it every hour strictly. At least you don't have to. In dreams, you usually don't do a rarity check on random because you are too much into the dream plot. So, just do it when you see, hear, smell, feel, think something strange that is not usual. This can be just a little strange (like you din't find your keys) or something really extraordinary (like a dead cat glued to your door...). There shouldn't be a set number of RCs a day (at least this is my opinion). Also, you should do it whenever you find yourself in a new situation (eg. you're talking to a stranger). This doesn't mean you can't look around for strange things . And be sure to do those RCs right or no good will happen .
Second, you should start practicing All Day Awareness (in short: ADA). It's one of the most important things I think. It costs a lot of energy in the first days but eventually you get used to it. It enhances your dream recall, makes you more vivid dreams, helps in lucidity, and even makes your Real Life more colorful. It's a very good aid to any of the techniques and can also be used as a stand-alone one.
