Let me begin by saying that I don't practice "ADA" as per what it may mean on this site. Maybe I do, but I haven't read the actual tutorial so King Yoshi's method may be different than I assume.
First I focused on concentration, and once I became good with that I moved on to "insight meditation" (being mindful of all that distracts you as well as your chosen object of concentration, and more; which is more like ADA).
For just the concentration I focused on one object at a time, trying to become "absorbed" into it fully. This is not required for lucid dreaming, but it will be a great help for you in controlling your mind so that you can move on to a wider awareness. I bring this up because it can be used within your "ADA" practice at will. For example if you become confused with too much sensory input or you are having trouble with ADA, you can resolve to simply focus on one thing only; such as one sound, your breath, the running water over your hands, your feet as they move over the ground, etc. You don't have to master concentration before doing regular ADA, but it can be used as a springboard into better awareness on those days when your mind just won't quiet down.
If you do attain a high level of concentration, your mind becomes very powerful, and you may find that ADA comes easy.
To do this, you first must have iron determination. This is the most important factor. When you become distracted, you don't analyze anything, just bring your mind back to the object, ignoring all else and reinforcing your determination to succeed. I found this a practical method for me because instead of jumping right into daily awareness, I merely had one goal: one object, and therefore the mind was easier to tame and program.
Just my two cents.
