Some time ago I tried to play some self-made mp3 files in order to help me attain lucidity. The first days my excitement used to screw things a little due to I wasn't able to go back to sleep so easily and couldn't fit on my programmed schedule. After some days, I was able to calm down and let my sleep pattern naturally flow, I was able to induce the sounds into the dreams although I didn't notice them . Unfortunately I didn't have much time to work on it, so I let that project in stand by.
To avoid wearing things on my head, I attached the earphones to the sides of my bedhead and set the volume at an acceptable level, during night you won't need too much volume anyway. I think if it's a pair of small speakers it could work better. I would suggest to regulate the volume level of your sounds turning them at the minimum. If they are too loud, they could wake you up too much and you could have problems going back to sleep. Anyway, I think you're on the right path, just try stop thinking too much in the results and let your body naturally go back to sleep.
Hope it helps somehow and good luck!
