i hate nightmares, i can never become lucid in them through intense fear, if you can become lucid, you stand a better chance of slaying them.
that being said, if anything is stressing you out, or depressing you as late, or feel ill, it could account for the nightmare.
and if like oneupboy71 says, you had a false awakening, then that would explain the fact that they were still visible in the room.
I was once sure that there were demons in my bedroom once, squeezing their way through the wall, i was sat on the end of my bed, convinced i was awake, when in truth, i was having a false awakening.
don't worry yourself about it, just work at lucidity
