    Deja Vu

This one has been a long time in coming. I used to get things like this all the time. I'd dream something and then days (sometimes years) later I'd see it in the waking world and I'd remember.
My clearest example: Years before I would move to a new state and start at a new school, I had a dream that I was in a place I didn't recognize, looking out onto a stage. There are a ring of teenagers with papers in their hands, sitting on the floor. There's a boy with a bright yellow shirt and white-blonde hair with this back to me.

In 2001 I moved to Indiana, they needed someone for a small role and invited me to play it. At our first meeting, I'm standing on the left wing of the stage, watching them setting down into a ring with the scripts in their hands. Zach has his back to me, he has white blonde hair and is wearing a bright yellow shirt.

Usually it isn't so clear. The conditions have to be just right. So there I am, standing in front of my hall mirror. I've never braiding my hair in front of this mirror before. I can hear something from the bedroom, I don't have a hair tie so I turn away from the mirror, thinking about undoing the braid and getting dressed for bed and the trip my boyfriend is going on. I see the hall (obviously). Vertigo strikes me and I stop, god it feels familiar. My boyfriend's shoes at the end of the hall, they haven't been there very long, he's going on a trip tomorrow. That's the only reason they sit where they do. The portable heater is also at the end of the hall, the lights are on. Of all the hundred times I've turned from the mirror and walked down the hall, it's only after I've braided my hair and the shoes are there that I'm stricken.

I had forgotten how strange it feels. I vaguely remembered a dream I had when I was a kid, when I was a long ways off from living in this duplex. Turning toward a hallway, seeing the heater at the end of the hall, a pair of shoes off to the side under the ironing board. I can't recall much more, in the dream the other rooms felt...busy, like there were people in them. Sort of wild, unhinged.

I should go to bed, I have to get up early. I have some things I wanna work on tomorrow when I get home from the airport.
