    Lucid #232: Chasing Shadows

I’m alone on a dirt road at night, and I know that this has to be a dream. The dirt road stretches forever in either direction, but that’s fine. I don’t intend to follow it anyway.

I clearly remember my intent to summon Dreamer, and I extend my right hand. “I know you’re already here,” I say. I don’t feel anything just now, but I don’t worry about it.

I look down at the road and see my shadow there below, alone. I look up and speak out loud to Dreamer about where I’m intending for us to go. I still don’t feel her hand but when I look down, there’s the vague shape of a woman’s shadow standing next to mine, her hand seemingly extended to where mine would be.

Good enough, then. I jump into the air and start flying upward toward the stars. After a few moments something feels wrong and I fall into the void.

I keep talking to Dreamer, reminding her and myself of where I’m going to take her in this dream, but I’m still missing that feel of a physical hand. I feel nervous that I’m spending too long in the void without a plan and I’ve forgotten what I’d intended to do in this situation.

I bring my hands back together and start rubbing them. It feels like I’m giving up on the summon, and I feel a little frustrated. The hand keeps me in the dream as I fly through the void. It works for a good while, but I’ve lost touch with my plans for the dream now.

I hold my hands up in front of my face, staring at them until I can make out their shape and a little bit of the detail. I’m lost, and without me driving the action forward,
    the dream ends.

      Awwww, I'm sorry I didn't show up!
That part with the shadow was cool!
You will find me next time, I just know it!
Congrats on the lucidity anyway, that is always a win!

Thanks! I know that I'll get the summon right very soon! The only thing that I wish I'd done differently was made much more happen with the void. Unfortunately, my playbook just slipped through my fingers at that moment. Because the ol "Dreamer pulls you from the void" has been consistently awesome, not to mention the imagining a new scene approach that's worked so well for you from the WILD class.

Or if only there had been a lady nearby that I could have blessed with purple hair!

      Oh! How'd that get there??

      LOL! I love that smiley!

Yeah, I can't believe how instantly that WILD visualisation tip has paid off! I never thought of myself as being very suited to visual incubation since my other senses seem much stronger, but this has seemed almost effortless!

I can't wait to hear your brags tomorrow, it's going to be a great night!

Yeah, you're great at that WILD visualization! It always sounds so simple when you do it, too, which is encouraging. Now for me to remember to copy that!

Absolutely! I'm of course excited about my plans for tonight, but I think that now that I know yours, I think I know whose dreamscape to watch for serious epic action. Brags ahead!

Congrats on the LD CL! That dirt road stretching forever seems like a fitting image...one which evokes thoughts of all of the miles we can travel in these wonderful dreamscapes!

      Very well said!

May we never run out of road or the will to travel it!

Congrats on the ld! The dirt road was quite intriguing, even symbolic.

Hey, didn't we at some point talk about the shadow summon, where you mentioned another case where you observed a shadow?

Thanks, Nyx, I enjoyed the road scene quite a bit myself! It was a very tranquil place. Could have used maybe a little more light, but super peaceful!

Yes!! I have no idea when we discussed this but I distinctly remember it. I guess we were wondering how promising of a technique it would be. My results were mixed here, but I'm going to try to just keep flowing between different summoning techs as situations present themselves. I'm really trying to stay as flexible as possible and avoid frustration as much as I can. One of many things I'm working on.

Well, that is a pretty good strategy! I think it really pays off to learn to go with the flow of the dream and allow for as much flexibility as possible. Thinking on one's feet maybe be a bit of challenge at first, but if we practice this attitude as often as possible, at some point it will become a habit.

You mentioned things you are working on. Are there other goals that you are trying to crack currently? I still need to work on that list I wrote couple of months ago.

Hey Nyx! At the moment I'm primarily trying to do a little better with my daytime practices. I really feel like it's time that I brought my LD rate up a bit. I have so much that I want to do with lucid dreaming that I feel like I really need to take the time to master the fundamentals and get my rate up.

The daytime practice that I've been trying for the past... week and a half (?) is the gravity RC. It's demanding and I've hit just a bit of a wall on how frequently it comes to mind. If you're not familiar, this is hukif's technique of creating an instantaneous, inconspicuous reality check based on gravity. The theory behind it is that it's fast and simple enough that you can basically have a reality check going throughout a huge percentage of the day. So far I'm still trying to build that up. I've just hit a bit of a wall so I think I'm going to enhance things a bit, possibly by using alarms.

I'm also continuing to work on summoning Dreamer whenever I can remember, and that's really become pretty natural and easy now so long as I have enough dream and goal memory for it.

Oh! And also working on calming down as the dream first begins. Haven't had quite as much luck with that one but I continue to work on it!

Right now, upping frequency is the primary one, since it helps make all other goals progress more quickly!

Ah, getting one's rate up is definitely a very worthy if not the most important goal indeed. When you say you've hit a wall do you mean that the challenge is remembering to do the RCs or is the gravity check in itself difficult?

I haven't tried this technique in real life, but in some dreams I've noticed my gravity can be quite similar to real life, so I'm not sure if this would make a reliable RC for me. But still, I think it's good that one tries new techs or starts over with the fundamentals, that brings a lot of motivation and starting things from scratch helps one get back to a more organized ld schedule.

That's nice. She probably pops up in nlds too, I think she makes for a perfect lucidity DC. Perhaps you could work with her in lds or real life to further put emphasis on becoming lucid with her help. I've been trying to turn a classmate now into my lucidity DC, with some mixed results and semi lucidity, so hopefully something will come out of it eventually.

Well, you seem pretty calm to me but you know best. I think BB used a two part mantra like "Dream, slow" or something similar to help him with that.

It's remembering to do the reality checks! At first I was remembering to do the gravity RC more and more often but I've plateaued at a level that's well below where I want to be. For example, I hadn't thought about it for quite some time before reading this entry. I'm a little more tired than usual this morning, so I can make some excuse, but it kind of illustrates the problem I think.

Yeah! I tried the gravity RC in-dream once (after already becoming lucid) and the first attempt didn't feel quite as "weird" as I expected. Once I start shifting weight around it was really dramatic, impossible to miss. It was an interesting experience, at the same time encouraging and worrisome.

I also recently had a semi-lucid where I became basically aware that it was a dream but never did much with it or got that true feeling of lucidity. It just became part of the scenario. But it was encouraging to at least take note of the oddity of physics and use that to get some insight into my current state.

Yeah, she appears in tons of NLDs, so your idea is right on! A great deal of the time when she appears we'll be talking about dreaming in some way, so if I can just learn to pick up on that, there are some real possibilities! Back in the day I had some very limited success getting Wife to do this for me, but Wife has no personal interest in dreams, so it always felt a bit forced.

I'd love to hear more about how things have gone with your classmate and how you incubated this!

I guess we could make any tech/item produce great results as long as we practice it on a consistent basis. That should solve one of the issues of not having enough time/energy to frequently wbtb which is probably the most straightforward ld enhancer.

Those semi lucid states remain quite of a challenge as well. On the one hand, they are a great opportunity which I think in the long term could help one remain lucid for large blocks of time, if one manages to run on a low level awareness throughout the night. On the other hand, it's easy to lose that lucid moment to the dream because with that lower level awareness our tasks are also less accessible or we forget about tasks at all. I guess it would help to develop some sort of awareness boosting routine for those instances...

Basically, I let dreams dictate the course of events, which was really interesting. After browsing through some nld entries, I started to see a storyline develop over time. This classmate would be interested in lds, would talk about dreaming, etc. So, during the day I would think about that and sometimes during dreams I would start analyzing her presence and behavior and in some instances this would help become lucid or be semi lucid.
