Lucid #228: The Fall from Orbit

I’m lying in bed when I sense a shift and suspect that a WILD has begun. Something feels not quite real about the situation. I rub my hands together. It’s close, but it feels like I’m dreaming this rather than experiencing it in the waking world. I feel Wife stir next to me and wonder if she can sense me moving around.

I try to speak but all that comes out is a strange, reluctant croak. There’s no doubt that it’s a dream now. The sense of being in bed becomes less and less clear and I feel like I’ve at least partially entered the void.

I wait for a while, relying on hand-rubbing to keep me in the dream but finally call out: “Dreamer, pull me out of here!” I feel the sensation of a hand grabbing my right arm and pulling me down toward where the “bed” would have been, and I get the sense that I’m rotating. When I’ve turned about 180 degrees I suddenly feel massive acceleration ahead of me and slightly downward, like something attached a rocket to me!

The acceleration halts and a new scene comes into view. I’m flying high above the Earth in lower earth orbit! The clouds look slightly pixelated but convincing enough that the effect is very dramatic.

I remember that all of my goals are on the surface of the planet, so I point myself downward and imagine myself shooting forward at top speed. I take off like a rocket, the ground rising dizzyingly fast to meet me. I’m shooting toward a bunch of buildings, headed directly for a house!

I’m prepare to plow into this house, but my fall stops short, my feet rotate back under me and I’m now standing gently on the ground next to a miniature house and a cluster of miniature buildings. What looked like a city seconds ago now looks like a bunch of little model buildings. The room is fully enclosed and dimly-lit but I can still see well enough to do what I want.

I want to summon Dreamer but there aren’t any DCs around to use. I remember my behind the back summoning tech, but I’m not feeling sure about how I executed it. It fizzles. I walk to another corner of the room and try it there. Still nothing.

I approach another part of the room where there’s a bar and a broad mirror above it. When I look into the mirror, I see myself standing there but in a completely different scene. My reflection is on some cobblestoned street, outdoors and it’s daytime. I strafe back and forth to test the reflection and he reacts as expected.

Now I spy the building’s glass front door and through it I see the cobblestoned scene I’d just viewed in the mirror. There’s a guy trying to get into the room, an Asian guy in his mid-twenties wearing glasses. Not the easiest DC to transform to Dreamer, maybe, but nothing I can’t handle!

I go up to the door to let him in and start messing with the lock. Then I realize what a waste of time this is. Why not just phase instead? I start the phase, my right arm passing straight through the glass but as I’m about to go the rest of the way,
    the dream ends.

This is bad ass, man! One of my goals is to do the "space jump," so I already love this dream. Also, very cool that Dreamer is always ready to assist you! Sounds like an awesome experience

Thanks very much, ThreeCat! Yeah, man, me too! I even have the Felix Baumgartner jump listed in my personal document of lucid goals! This was pretty close to what I had in mind, except that the speed of the fall was super fast. (Kinda uncomfortably so!)

Yeah I didn't manage any further interaction but it was cool of her to show up with the assist! And thanks, it was!

Thanks, Krista, it was a lot of fun! I have to say, though, I expected my first space jump to be much more carefully planned than this one was!

      Uuui - great dream!
To be spat out of the void in earth orbit is by far the nicest exit I read about up to now! I guess, you've been there before - that's so great! One fine day...

Your space jump was awesome, just like out of a sci-fi movie. 'Star Trek: Fall into darkness' had a space jump but between star ships.

@StephL - Thanks a lot, Steph! I've been to the void before but you know, this is I believe only my 2nd time that far out in space! The first time I was a pretty new LDer and managed to freak out and end the dream.

You know you want to do a Felix Baumgartner dive, Steph! You know it!

@greendrive - Thanks, man, much appreciated! Oooh, now I really want to see this scene! I will definitely check that out. Space jumps simultaneously get me crazy excited and crazy nervous.

Congrats CL!! I love space!! I don't think I could have resisted staying up there even with the goals, but the trip down sounded cool as well! And good job Dreamer...or CL's subconscious pulling ya through!

Thanks, fogelbise, I'm right there with you on space, man! This was a very very pleasant surprise.

I think you're right, if I'd had a little bit more mental clarity I believe that I would have figured out plenty of fun stuff to do out in space. I kinda had my plan in mind, though, and went for it! Although it did dimly occur to me that I could get Advanced Flight points if I hauled ass back down to Earth.

Yeah, man, for real! I need to line her up for void -> space transitions more often!

Nice way to super accelerate out of the void. I wonder if the thought of acceleration and rockets subconsciously connected to the association of space and voila you were there! Very cool!

Oh, that so much reminds me of that entry where I was flying over real to then miniature version of Rome.

Loved the different scene mirror effects by the way.

Dude you were in a nearly realistic orbit and you went back down? I'm so disappointed.

Nice work, dream-Dreamer! I'll happily take the credit for that save!

Super cool dream, what an awesome experience in space!

@Xanous - Ha ha, I know, man, talk about goal-obsessed! That's one thing that I maybe should have dialed back a bit on the comp. I think that I've become a little more rigid and rulebound, like there's only this one thing I should permit myself to do. And it's not like it's gotten very many points in this comp anyway!

@Dreamer - Yeah for real! Good job, dream-Dreamer, good job! It was a cool save and many thanks for the free trip into space! Stick around next time, maybe we'll do a little interplanetary dream flight!

@Nyx - Thanks! I didn't think about it too much at the time, but this makes perfect sense! I guess that's usually the way of things in dreams. (Not doing a lot of thinking, ha ha...)

It definitely makes sense that the association of rockets and space along with my continued fascination with the Felix Baumgartner jump brought all this together into a nice little free-falling package.

And thanks, the mirror stuff was neat to me too! Ophelia got me into mirrors with all of her stories and she's right, they are very cool to play around with!

Yes, I'm so fascinated about the way our brain bundles information together. Btw, I read a summary of a study how scientists were able to manipulate the dreams of mice by playing a certain sound they associated with a particular direction while they slept. Will try to see if I can dig up the original study to see if this is indeed so.

All these associations offer many opportunities for both induction and dream control if only we are able to understand them better and use them more efficiently.

It definitely makes sense that the association of rockets and space along with my continued fascination with the Felix Baumgartner jump brought all this together into a nice little free-falling package.
That jump was amazing! He certainly knows how to make his dreams come true!
