    The Third Arm

    Lucid #245: The Third Arm

I’m sitting next to Wife at a little craft table, both of us working on our laptops. I don’t know what she’s doing, but I seem to be writing some code for the game. My iPod is laying on the desk next to me, and I try to cue up some music on it. I swipe and poke randomly at the screen, and a song starts playing. Horrifyingly, the performer in the song is me! I’m braying out some horrible-sounding song that’s a cross between “Tribute” and just random squawking.

I desperately stab at the screen to try to make this stop. Now some British synth-pop is playing instead, much better. I note how strange the screen appears, and I remember to
look for the dream. I stand up, and find that both Wife and the craft table appear to have vanished. I remember my intention to summon Dreamer and attempt the bonus Task of the Month (to find and play a musical instrument that doesn’t exist in waking life.)

For some reason, I have this very strong belief that the dream is taking place in my childhood home and that it’s completely empty. I affirm that Dreamer is already here in the room with me but I don’t believe it. I walk from room to room, saying things like, “[Dreamer], you’re right around the corner…” but never quite believing it.

I look down at my hands and say, “[Dreamer], you’re walking right beside me.” As I say this, a third arm extends right out of my chest, lining up its palm with my own palms. The upper part of the arm is covered by the sleeve of a purple polo shirt. I wonder whether this is Dreamer’s arm…? The purple sleeve seems really promising, but the arm kinda has a man-hand that looks more like mine. I think about what I can do with this to complete the summon, but can’t quite figure anything out before the arm vanishes.

I proceed into the den, saying out loud again that I’m expecting to find “[Dreamer]” here (using her waking life name.) I say something about her being “purple”, and expect to see her. As I turn my gaze around the room, I spy a purple director’s chair in the corner, but no Dreamer sitting in it.

Again I expect to see “purple” Dreamer, but instead I summon a purple trampoline, leaned up against the wall! And now look, there’s a purple wall hanging over one of the windows. I peer through the window, seeing only darkness beyond. I feel like there’s no certain dreamworld beyond this house right now, and even though I consider the idea of leaving, I feel nervous about trying this.

Maybe I just need to try calling her “Dreamer” instead of using her waking life name. I try this for a while, too, but I’m having a terrible time shaking this idea that the house is empty. I sense that I’ve let myself get stuck and that I should be able to think my way out of this. I call out a few more times, noting that I’ve actually had quite a bit of dream time. I worry that I should have done more with the third arm or that cool-looking purple trampoline. It isn’t long before
    the dream ends.

Wow the third arm thing is trippy. I'm not sure how I would have reacted to that. Super cool!

Sometimes it's better to go with your gut on these things. I get this feeling a lot and it's usually a fight to push past it. Sometime I don't make it, so it always feels like a big decision whether or not I want to try it.

Thanks, man! Yeah, it was very cool and just like you I wasn't quite sure what to do with that. If should think about what I would if anything like this happens again! Got to be some kind of way to make something cool happen!

Yeah, if I was in the right mindset I could have changed this very easily, I think. But for whatever reason I couldn't think cleverly about how to sidestep this limited thinking. Hopefully next time I can open my mind and just transcend that apparent environment. I seem to do the best when I remember that there's not really any particular constraints apart from what I create on my own.

Sometimes this is easier to remember than other times!

That's the thing we all need to remember the most!

I've been reading through your dream journal. Why does Dreamer appear so much in your dreams?

Ah cool, thanks for reading my DJ, JadeGreen! Dreamer and I started a challenge 4 months ago to see who could be the first to have a dream featuring the other person, which quickly progressed to an ongoing challenge: http://www.dreamviews.com/lucid-chal...challenge.html

It worked really well for us, and after having so much fun boasting, bragging, and encouraging one another during the challenge, we decided to become dream partners. Basically, lots of supporting one another's dream practices and working to have the other person appear in our dreams, then sharing those experiences. Incredibly motivating! It's no exaggeration to say that partnering up with Dreamer has brought on a bigger step forward in my practices than anything else I've done.

Congrats on the ld! Have you noticed that a lot of your recent ld nld beginnings feature a musical experience? I suppose this is due to incubation for the bonus task!

Interesting occurrence with the purple sleeve. You got a number elements correct just couldn't assemble them into a full Dreamer. Even so, it's really funny to watch how our subcon follows commands - I need a hand, ok, a purple hand, there you go!

Man, you're right, Nyx! I think you're right, a lot of this has to do with thinking about the bonus task (which is in fact the next one that I had in mind to do!) In addition to that, we've been working with and scrutinizing what we think is the final version of our game music, so it's just been on the mind a lot lately!

Yes, it's quite cool watching the subconscious give you bits and pieces of what you're looking for, a little mix of things you were thinking about at the time, plus some randomness thrown in to keep things interesting. If I can just manage to flow with it, I think it'll work out in my favor! Hopefully this will come with practice!

What a coincidence, I've been blasting your rendition of Tribute on repeat for the last week here!

Haha wow, apart from the man-hand, that third arm seemed like a sure thing!

I think I already told you, but I had a non-lucid dream that featured a trampoline on this night, too... I wonder where that came from!

Thank you for putting in such a great effort to find me! I'm sorry I didn't make it easy for you this time... Next time will be a breeze, I bet!

Hey, another interesting similarity... I had trouble with an empty house for my instrument TotM, and I almost thought I wasn't going to be able to find anything in the house. I think you'd posted this dream before I posted mine, so hopefully I didn't infect you with that schema!

Heee, JadeGreen - I love that you purplified my name!
Canis has been a huge motivator and positive influence in my dreaming journey too, so the feelings are mutual!
That reminds me, I need to start updating that thread again!

Whaaaat?? How shocking to suggest that such a thing even exists! Even more shocking to imply that you would listen to this sort of thing voluntarily!

Haha wow, apart from the man-hand, that third arm seemed like a sure thing!
Ha ha, I know! I was feeling really good about it! I should have just ignored the fact that for the moment you happened to have big, beefy dude-paws! A Dreamer summon with big, beefy dude-paws would have actually been rather amusing! =)

You're right, those are two very interesting sync-ups there! And yeah, in each case, I believe that the dreams took place before we'd exchanged our brags on those scenes. So that's really cool! I wouldn't be surprised if there was Brag Bleedover at some point, but the fact that these themes came up cleanly on their own is really cool.

I really don't know how to interpret the trampoline similarity, but that's neat! It's fun to speculate on how similar the dream geography in our separate houses may have been. Mine started with the basic structure of my childhood home but had a lot of odd twists, turns, and extra rooms (as often happens in dreams.)

Canis has been a huge motivator and positive influence in my dreaming journey too, so the feelings are mutual!
Aww, much appreciated, my friend! I'll see you and your appropriately proportioned lady-hands in the next LD! That summon is going to work!
