      How possible is shape shifting

Hi. I'm a newbie to LDing and I've only had 3 actually lucid dreams; only one of which was more than 10 seconds (like 1.5 mins).

When my next 3 month holiday starts, I will start keeping an active dream journal and doing all the stuff that makes LDing easier. But for now, my schedule is very tight.

Just wanted to ask the question: Is it possible to significantly change your form in a dream? I'm not talking about changing my character to elvis or anything. I'm talking about shifting my shape to something totally different like a monster with tentacles or something or a bird or something if those mental images help you imagine it being a drastic change.

Is it possible to remain within one shape shifted form for the majority of the LD? And how difficult is it?

I've flew around as a pterodactyl, but my dream recall was a little bit hazy in that dream. I do remember that I was basically in that form for the whole time, but essentially I wasn't doing anything that required me to experience much different from my regular dreams, as I have flown a lot before.

To be honest, it's only difficult if you make it that way. If you can visualize yourself being a different form, and doing things, it's gonna come to you easier. For me I typically try to imagine what will happen in a dream right before it happens then make some action that would initiate the action, for example, a few nights ago I had a dream where I wanted something to come up from the ground, so I imagined what it would look like, then brought my hands up in a rising motion while I focused intently on where I wanted this object brought up from the ground, and it happened perfectly.

At least, that's how I do dream control, as for staying that shape for the entire dream... well you'll just have to practice that I'd say.

It's quite possible to shift forms in a dream, even drastic shifts. I recently spent most of a LD doing nothing but testing the difficulty of assuming various forms, and the only one I couldn't do was a potted tree. And perhaps I'm just not creative enough to visualize what it must be to be a tree, I don't know.

As far as how long, it seems to depend. If you're a bird, and flying, most likely you're going to stay a bird. If you're a shark, and stay swimming, you should stay a shark. If you stop for a while... that's where you can spontaneously revert. A form seems perfectly stable so long as it 'reminds' you that you're in it, whether by moving or whatever. When that wavers, you can lose it... but that goes for anything in a lucid dream, really.

I was always a dreamer, in childhood especially. People thought I was a little strange.-Charley pride

Not that hard, depending on how you do it, I have been lots of bugs, a dragon, a girl, bacteria, plants, a planet, etc etc.
Just be creative with how you transform.

I've been wondering about this too today, the advice above seems pretty great. But as a person on the same LD count as you I thought I'd throw my own 2 cents in. When reality checking in my most recent LD I not only put my finger through my palm, I started twisting fingers etc until I eventually got to the point where I could grow new fingers. Baby-steps seem to be the key to everything in lucid dreaming

What a coincidence. Yesterday I got back to reading the DV forums and to my surprise, I recalled my first dream in a month. The dream was semi lucid, very vivid, and very weird. Weird in the fact that I wasn't a human. Maybe creating this thread left one too many thoughts in my mind. I kinda knew it was a dream, but I didn't bother to do anything so it reverted back to a normal dream.
Nice to see that it's possible in dreams though. Although in this dream the shape shift wasn't my choice, it still fealt real.
      Nice to know.

Sounds nice. I managed to do telekinesis in my third dream since the dream was very stable and vivid at the time. I was just like "Heck, I'm gonna take advantage of this rare opportunity".. The dream ended after that when I walked out of the room and a person very close to me suddenly appeared in front of me. I was so suprised/frightened that I woke up.

Yeah. I pretty much learnt that from my first 2 lucids. They were too frightening. Not gonna go into details, it'd require a huge amount of effort to try and explain what they were. Lets just say that they were outta this world.

      Thanks for the replies everybody.

The closest thing to shapeshifting Iv done is melting. I find it easier to reenact scenes from movies....I just started shouting ''IM MELTING'' ... it worked ;p

      It also felt unique

Changing my body and keeping track how things feel with this dreambody is my anchor when trying to WILD. I can clearly imagine to change myself, and what I must do to make the cange and it will be one of the first things I will try when i become lucid.

And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell,
That my keen knife see not the wound it makes,
Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark,
      To cry, 'Hold, hold!'

Ever had dreams where you are someone else than you? In such dreams your physical form is altered, which basically is shapeshifting. Shapeshifting is very easy for me, for example I did it last night in a non-lucid dream (I shapeshifted into a panther in order to run faster). You'll just have to be able to imagine yourself doing it, I guess it's little like summoning something.

Shape shifting into something non humanoid is very possible. although in my own experience, the only non human thing I've been is a dragon. I didn't will myself to be one. I just started to fly, then i looked around and then I realised I was a dragon. at this point sometimes it would go into 3rd person view. I would just fly around, and I was able to "land" and crawl around like a giant lizard. I didn't feel any different.
