Exactly how good can someones recall become?

I've been wondering for a while, what exactly is considered good dream recall? Anybody can say they remember one dream a night, but exactly how much do they remember?? Sometimes I have trouble putting things together, even in lucids. How much should we be able to remember?

I'm just asking because I've always assumed I had average recall. My best recall comes from morning dreams and afternoon naps.

I've wondered the same thing. My recalls been really random lately, so it's hard to tell if I have good recall or not.

I've always thought 'good' recall (this is very subjective) would be considered remembering 2-3 dreams most nights. Maybe 2 dreams that are remembered pretty well, and one or two that are just bits and pieces.

The most I've ever recalled in a night is 5 dreams, 3 of which were full story lines, 2 where just short scenarios, if that makes any sense.

Took me over 30 minutes to type it all out.

Well in the last month my recall has gotten pretty good, everynight i remember at least 3 of my dreams and i can remember what the characters in my dreams are saying (usually spend 20minutes just writing out the dialog of my dream), certain numbers that i pick up on and the detail of the location in my dreams are getting better and better.. through the day i usually pick up on different little parts of my dream that i might of missed out on by just thinking of the dream and letting the rest of the pieces fall into place.. it gets kind of confusing tho because im focusing on remembering one dream and may forget other parts of the other ones.. but still each dream is pretty detailed.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm starting to think my recall is actually below average. I'm not going to lie, I have lots of lucid dreams, and I struggle to recall them. However, I guess I just assumed it was normal.

you should try waking yourself up from the dream once you have completed a few tasks. i know this sounds counterproductive, but would you rather lose the whole memory or stay in it a few minutes longer? i tend to lose lucidity, end up in a normal dream, and then suddenly remember in that dream that i need to wake up and write it all down.

I would say dream recall can become so good that we remember essentially every dream and every detail. It's all made by the subconscious, and it's all stored in subconscious memory (which keeps everything completely), so there's no reason why it's not possible. It would probably take inordinate amounts of time to get to that level, but certainly don't limit yourself. I'd say our perception of what good recall is, might be the reason why so many people have trouble getting decent recall.

Had a DILD yesterday. Once again, I couldn't remember much, but there's this one part I clearly remember. I had this guy on the floor, I was punching him in the face repeatedly and then he turned into a baby. I was like, "Oh, I'm dreaming. Nice". Then I walked to this balcony and I looked at the sun and I started thinking, "Wow this is pretty vivid. I can feel the heat". It was a great feeling. I'm sure I flew after that, but I don't remember, lol. It's just that sometimes when I'm not intending to have LD's, they just come anyway. I only slept for a few hours, who woulda thought a lucid dream would slip in somewhere.

highest I have recalled were 5 full dreams, and 3 fragments and scenarios.

Right now I have poor recall from a dryspell, but my recall's usually two dreams a night with excellent observation to my surroundings and what DCs say... My best recall was five dreams in one night, but the details were lesser because I had to remember so many of them.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

I've only been keeping a DJ for about a week, I normally remember one dream in full, maybe one in some detail, and 2-3 short scenarios or images. As for how good you can get, I guess immaia is doing pretty damn good, with up to 10 dreams per night

Lol, I don't do it often, so I'm sure that dude must have deserved it. As for him turning into a baby... Weird.
