A few of my favorite "diverse" metal songs/groups:

(I mostly like the metal that has a bit of a hip-hop inspiration to it...)
      Sevendust - Waffle
      YouTube - ‪sevendust waffle‬‏

      Sevendust - Black
      YouTube - ‪Sevendust - Black‬‏

(One of the greatest Chorus Riffs ever
White Zombie - More Human Than Human
      YouTube - ‪White Zombie - More Human Than Human‬‏

(I like the sheer craziness behind the concept of this one - being that the lyrics are a twist on regular nursery rhymes - and the overall sound. Makes me bob my head to it. KoRn is also one of my favorite metal bands)
      Korn - Shoots and Ladders
      YouTube - ‪Korn- Shoots and Ladders‬‏

(It's all about the break in this video: 1:55 - 2:25)
      Limp Bizkit - Faith
      YouTube - ‪FAITH - LIMP BIZKIT!!!!‬‏

(And then you have speed-metal. Not really a huge fan of it, but here is an example
Dragonforce - Through the Fire and Flames
YouTube - ‪Dragonforce - Through The Fire And Flames (Video)‬‏

(And, of course, the harder shit. This song is so hard it falls into the realm of "songs I wouldn't bump in public, but the instrumentation is awesome." Also, listen for how fucking sick the break is at 2:30 - 3:01. I'm honestly not a huge fan of the devil-screaming, though)
      Fear Factory - Zero Signal
      YouTube - ‪Fear Factory - Demanufacture - 03 - Zero Signal‬‏

(But, going back to what I mostly like, it's gotta have a little bit of melody in it. Disturbed is good stuff.)
      Disturbed - Stricken
      YouTube - ‪Disturbed - Stricken (Video)‬‏

Dragonforce is not speed metal, it's power metal, and a mediocre one at best. See, I just demonstrated the diversity of metal. There are infinite subgenres. It's the most diverse genre. Now I'm not a HUGE metal-savvy person but I know there are subgenres like death metal, black metal, power metal, altern metal, symphonic metal, speed metal... and they are all different. Now for the appeal to metal. I think it's just a great stress reliever. It's so good to headbang to, and it's very fun. I also appreciate the amazing talent most guitarists, vocalists, bassists and drummers in metal bands have. As for the screaming, that's actually very difficult to do. It's not just screaming in a random way, and once you start appreciating the talent it takes to do really good screams, you'll just love the brutality and intensity of screaming.

I don't like Dragonforce much because isn't it quite synthesised, like the guitar?

to be honest subgenre wars are really pointless. i didn't mean to be a subgenre fag, but i just wanted to point out how huge the metal genre really is

And yes, DragonForce are also known as "StudioForce". If you want a better power metal band, listen to Galneryus.

It isn't my job to 'impress' you with anything, but since you obviously aren't motivated enough to look for the music yourself, here you go:

      Evolutionary Sleeper by Cynic
      Autopsy by The Faceless
      Sky Is Mine by Amorphis
      Pussyfoot by Sikth

You can find the videos yourself.

Two viedoes that show how metal is so diverse.
Naked City - With Zorn on vocals instead of the normal guy[This band is really more of a diverse band who often play "metal"]

      Hella-Biblical violence

Although I admit, mainstream metal is pretty boring to me, it's just loud and angry for no reason most of the time.

157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

I like metal, mainly post-hardcore metal though. This thread shouldnt have a poll as it is useless because of all the sub genres of music

What made you think post-hardcore was a subgenre of metal and not hardcore?

      No underground rap or horrorcore?

I absolutely hate mainstream, to me it shows how lame your music taste is, hearing something on TV and saying its the best thing you ever heard but still if you like it my apologies.

      No, you implied.

What you did was tell people 'I don't like what you like'. You don't know what they like. I agree we can give 'mainstream music' a broad definition. But critiquing it as a whole? Difficult to do without broad generalizations.

But even then that's not what you did. You took the line that it is bad because it is mainstream. You're as elitist as the Top 10 shows that put up the same manufactured sounds every week. You're what is wrong with music appreciation. The person that defines music on popularity and scene rather than caring a damn what that music is.

Well done for being underground. Well done for being edgy. Well done for making both of those terms as bubblegum predictable and cliched as the popular tunes on the radio every day and the people that listen to them.

Ironic, you claim this yet you don't even know me.

I respect everyone's taste in music just not the people who don't respect yours.
I did not mean anything like what you just said. In fact I would say I am the opposite of what you typed. If you like mainstream cool, I just said that if you are not open-minded and can't understand taste from others view than you are completely ignorant.
I wasn't referring to everyone just the people I described.

I knew a guy who was exactly like what you posted so I know for sure I am NOT like that.

And FYI I do appreciate music a lot, a lot more than others.

Edit: And I do not define music by "popularity and scene" I listen to underground because I enjoy everything about it not because of anything else.

If you can't appreciate all genres, you don't appreciate music. But okokokok, stop picking on the teenagers.

I'd like to voice my opinion on the metal being the most diverse genre. I'd say it only appears that way because the fans tend to break it up SOOO much. I almost feel like every other band is it's own genre of metal, and I just get lost in a sea of subgenre. In reality, the most diverse genre is probably electronic, considering this is a blanket genre for ANY music that contains ANY synthesized OR sampled sounds, which is pretty much all pop from the 2000s, all electronica (and it's billions of trillions of subgenres), all computer music (avant garde or otherwise), a lot of metal, a lot of modern rock (and it's billions of trillions of subgenres), yada yada you get the picture. Or wait, could we not also make the argument that the most diverse genre is western classical considering nearly all of western (western hemisphere) music is derived from western classical? (equal temperament, anyone?) Of course that doesn't cover microtonality, but that fits somewhere in the avant garde world, usually. Also, a very large majority of eastern music (mostly modern to the past 100 years) is derived from a mixture of eastern and western classical.

Point being, it all comes from the same place. No genre is more diverse than any other. I'll stand by that one. They all tend to fit in the superset genre of western classical (to a historical point).

Also, this seems appropriate here. This quote sums up how I feel about electronic music:

"As for the future of electronic music, it seems quite obvious to me that its unique resources guarantee its use, because it has shifted the boundaries of music away from the limitations of the acoustical instrument, of the performer’s coordinating capabilities, to the almost infinite limitations of the electronic instrument. The new limitations are the human ones of perception."— Milton Babbitt
