Westboro Baptist Church to protest Marine's funeral in... Mississippi

Westboro Baptist Church, the wonderful group of people who show up at the funerals of U.S. soldiers to loudly insult them with remarks about who God hates, is going to pull the stunt of their career tomorrow. They are going to try their outrageous charade at Pine Lake Baptist Church in Brandon, Mississippi, where there will be a funeral for a staff sargeant who was killed in Afghanistan. I think they are in for a huge surprise. The extra loud and extra crazy Baptists are about to fuck with the REAL Baptists. Maybe nothing will happen to the Westboro crazies, but they will playing a whole new ball game. They need to watch a few movies about Mississippi first so they can really know where they are. I think there is a 90% chance at least one of the members will be physically harmed. It might be the big news story next week. We'll see. Here's an article followed by forum talk that involves threats of violence...

Please explain. I don't think I mentioned the Bible. Can you quote me on whatever it is you are talking about?

By the way, what do you think of Westboro Baptist Church (a specific denomination, not the Bible)?

I don't think the ploice will allow any violence to take place during the funeral. Real Baptists, whatever that means I'm sure will practice what they preach. If not, then they will look like fools themselves.

It was just light humor, lol. You said violence could occur and I thought up a trollish statement which would explain the manner of violence with a pun.

I may not agree with that Christian sect, but I don't disrespect their beliefs in itself. Each to his own, and every variation of Christianity supposedly has it's elements of truth and that which is misunderstood/false. In terms of their actions with these funeral services, I disagree entirely.

Edit: I am a Christian myself, however I'm a Morman.

Ahh Westboro. If only we stopped paying attention to them, they might finally shut up. Unfortunately, they're just too provocative. Takes a little too much self control to ignore them.
Anyways, I agree with greenhavoc. Hopefully the "real baptists" don't do anything, because they will only be giving a bad reputation to the majority of baptist Christians who are not violent extremists.
Also, I don't know why Mississippi baptists would be particularly violent... are movies really a good source for accurate info on Mississippi?

By "real" Baptists I mean "typical" Baptists who are passionately religious and of the historically well known Baptist subcultures. Have you ever heard of the Bible Belt or Southern Baptists? Do you know about the history of violence, patriotism to the extreme, and intolerance that exist in the South, especially in Mississippi and Alabama? If you think Mississippi Baptists in large numbers can be counted on to follow the peaceful teachings of Jesus, you are not too familiar with the history. Southern Baptists tend to believe very strongly in whipping ass. If you tell me that's hypocritical, you will be preaching to the choir.

Most of the famous movies about Mississippi portray the Protestant redneck culture fairly to very accurately. Some of the movies, such as Mississippi Burning and Ghost of Mississippi, are actual historical accounts. The cafe scene in Easy Rider illustrates the mentality I am talking about very well too, though that scene was set and filmed in Louisiana, which borders Mississippi. I'm telling you... the subculture that Westboro is about to fuck with is very, very different from what they are used to.

I was brought up southern bab, but I don't remember any whipping of the ass mentality floating around.

Hmm I wonder if you've ever even been to Mississippi?
Not to say I have either (well technically I have been), or that I can even really give any evidence to prove you wrong... but it seems like you're stereotyping.
I've heard people say things about my home before (usually people who have never been to where I'm from) that are largely stereotypes and honestly believe them to be true. I mean, I would say there are probably baptists in Mississippi who are also "ass-whipping" extremists, but the definition of extremism is something that is... extreme, meaning not in the norm. Most people prefer to live quiet lives if they can manage it, y'know?

But maybe you're right. It would be interesting to see, I suppose, but kind of sad at the same time. It's only gonna promote a negative image for all baptists.

Things have gotten a lot better, but the element does still live on here. Also, I don't think all Southern Baptists are ass whipping rednecks. It is just that the element I talked about is still strong and very prevalent in the denomination. Also, it's not just Southern Baptists who are going to be showing up for the Westboro show.

I don't know how these fools haven't been met with a hail of bullets during a protest.

If they kill Fred Phelps I will smile and laugh and tell everyone I know how great a day it is.

Some people deserve to die... Like the people that say people in the army should die and burn in hell.

There are very few people who I hate enough to make me wish there were a hell, Fred is on definitely on that list

Then I guess you would know. :p

I wouldn't say anyone at westboro deserves to die... certainly they are inflammatory, but they're not physically harming anyone. They're a very small minority group, they have no real power. Their only power is to get the nation's attention by saying and doing offensive, ridiculous things.

Someone needs to give those morons a beat down. But... don't a lot of Mississippians support what they say, they certainly vote that way? Mississippi is know through the rest of the states as the most socially backwards state (besides maybe Alabama), especially when it comes to civil rights. Neil Young needs to write another Southern Man. Don't be offended UM, I'm sure you know that and I didn't say they all were, I know your stance on civil rights, but the whole country remembers the atrocities of Governor Wallace, and that won't be forgotten any time soon.

One thing from that article though:
These nuts, while they have the right to their own opinion, do NOT have the right to intrude upon a grieving family honoring and burying their fallen 28-year old Marine.
Unfortunately, that's not true. If the cemetery is public property, they have the right to protest wherever they want I hate stupid hillbillies, but love the Bill of Rights more Sometimes I hate being a pacifist.

oh my gosh don't get me started on this Westboro fucking bullshit. I can't stand this shit. I live in Missouri, and they've done shit here with the "GOD HATES FAGS" signs crap. And it repulses me to the inner core I tell you. I am a Christian Deist, I keep to myself about what I believe. I actually hate a lot of denominations in Christianity, because they run around preaching. I hate evangelical people. I can't stand it, I hate when other Christians say derogatory things towards gay and every other cliche complaint. I don't understand why people are this cruel to others

lots of people deserve death: murderers, rapists, child molesters, the Phelps, etc.

Give me a valid reason as to why any of those types of people should be allowed to breathe
