      Split Canada up.

So, here's an interesting scenario. I am a firm believer in Western independence of Canada. It would be VERY economically feasible for both parties. It's actually been proposed before, anyway, suppose that this happens and restarts the Quebec independence movement, or vice versa.

Now, as you can see, Western Canada has been indicated in pink, and original Canada in red. Quebec is in blue, and has now made New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island, enclaves. This would not be a very good thing for those provinces, nor would it be feasible for Canada. Now, they could just form their own country, but I don't really think that would be economically feasible for them until further down the road when tidal power becomes a factor, perhaps then New Brunswick could become independent, taking the rest with them. What are your thoughts on this?

Well, there would need to be a new precedent for such division, but it sounds possible enough.

I don't know enough about canadian economics and politics to form an opinion on the matter..

Perhaps you could elaborate, OP, on how you believe that this would be a good decision? How much, if any, resistance has such a movement encountered?

The economy in the west of Canada is very strong, Vancouver is a major port city, the Oil and Farming industries of Alberta and Saskatchewan, It just makes sense to me. Furthermore, Canada is so damn big that what applies to one province, is completely invalid elsewhere.

How much, if any, resistance has such a movement encountered?
The Western Canada one never really got off it's feet because the guy that brought it out in the open and had the "Western Concept Party", was a white supremacist. As for Quebec, they got way closer, look up "The October Crisis".

Even more pointless than Quebec separatism. Lets focus on going to Mars already.

Hmm... PErhaps instead of separating... People should work to reform government policies to make the most of the economic differences?

California and the Pacific Northwest should split off

Most of my fellow English folk don't believe me when I tell them that Canada is wider than the distance from England to Canada.

Every province in Canada should secede and fly the rebel flag.

I'd hate too see Canada split up, the fact that we have such diversity (on so many levels) is what makes this country so great. If anything, I think we need to build stronger ties with the provinces on the East.

Although I do find it ridiculous that our government seems to think that the laws that work in Ottawa will somehow magically work here on the West Coast (*insert Tupac's hand gestures* ). Each province needs a little more independence when it comes to law-making, the federal government shouldn't be able to force certain provinces to comply to laws that the majority of the citizens are against. eg. The overwhelming majority of BC residents want to decriminalize/legalize cannabis because prohibition is tearing our communities apart. Gang violence runs rampant and marijuana prohibition is at the heart of that problem. We understand this, but those jackasses in Ottawa can't get it through there thick skulls and because of this, there's not really anything we can do about it.

I believe in the right to autonomy. Which is why I believe Northern and Southern California should finally just SPLIT since they've been taking about it for ages.

Split up, Canada. That is, if you want to split up.

So much of that diversity is in Vancouver though. So, so much of it. I'd be all for staying together if we had proportional representation instead of first-past-the-post

It would not be in Canada's economic best interest to split up in any way. Sure, there are linguistic differences between Quebec and the rest of Canada, but that isn't a strong enough reason to break up your country. Just look at the linguistic strife in Belgium and how much bureacratic mess it's caused there.

If "the West", as you call it, breaks off from Quebec -- you're breaking off from the economic hubs of Quebec city and Montreal. This would be a bad idea.

Right now, with Europe struggling to keep its union together, Canada should work on staying together, and if anything, push towards greater globalization. This will inevitably happen as corporations become more global anyway.

Canada doesn't want to do this, and will explain to you why:

The US will still call it all Canada, because we are all naturally self-important assholes, but that's beside the point.

Just look at all of the countries south of Mexico north of South America. Do we know their names? Maybe one or two at best. In the end they are all just grouped in as "little mexico."
To summarize my point their will be no difference in Canada to the rest of the world, even if it divides it's political borders, because no one else even gives a shit.
“When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind.”

All i know is Quebec wants to split for the longest time. And yet nothing happened. So i don't think the whole of Canada will.

This will never happen, but let's suppose it would. I agree with you on Western Canada, those provinces could pull it off easily, but everything east of that, not so much. Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes don't exactly have the best economies, so they'd stick together, also Quebec, as much as they rant on about it, wouldn't separate. Newfoundland would never let go of Labrador, and if Canada split up, they'd almost certainly become their own country (or even join Britain). Looking at the history of the place, they're too different from the Maritimes, and with the oil money pumping through, they could pull it off. The North would probably stay with Ontario and Quebec along with the Maritimes.
EDIT: Forgot about Manitoba, also, I found this thread while browsing through this website, interesting concept.

Californians are down to annex all the way to Colorado and as far North as the Yukon if the Western Republic goes through with their split. I talked to Brown about it he said totes.
