We are in fact the malevolent puppeteers of our own lives whether we believe it or not. I have been tending to think lately that I am my own worst enemy in that regard. Self-stereotyping, locking ourselves into predetermined patterns of behavior, and conforming to the status quo as often as possible are representations of this evil I bear witness to.

One wonders whether it is genetics or crowd psychology that plays a larger role in this; I would like to think it's the latter.

OK, I'm going on a tangent, I have to get my feet back on track: From a cosmic perspective, the whole shebang seems highly unlikely. I have two scenarios in my head, one that happens so fast that we wont even be anywhere remotely conscious of it until it does happen, and two that we are so young as a species, that only likely a dramatic event like this will only happen well after we are gone.

However, who knows about humankind, this itself is a huge experiment on a planetary scale.

I tend to think that around this point of time is where limiting factors will be imposed on us by the planet. If we let our intellect to override our animalistic nature then it is a possibility we can save the status quo. This is a pipe dream; the status quo necessarily lends to the planet's destruction.
